Teachings from Namo Amituofo:
The 'Gentle and Elegant Fragrance of Virtue' refers to a phenomenon in the of Ultimate Bliss. When the breeze of virtue arises, it stirs the jewelled nets and trees, producing subtle sounds.
These sounds expound upon the teachings of suffering, emptiness, impermanence, , and the various perfections, while simultaneously releasing and scattering ten thousand kinds of gentle and elegant fragrances of virtue.
The fragrance carried by this breeze of virtue is mild and refined. Anyone who smells this fragrance will find that their worldly defilements and habitual tendencies —meaning their afflictions and negative habits— naturally cease to arise.
The 'Gentle and Elegant Fragrance of Virtue' is delivered by the breeze of virtue, which flows directly from Namo Amituofo’s own self-nature and radiates from the light of his heart. It ensures that the afflictions and habits of the beings in the Western Pure Land do not arise. Furthermore, the breeze is gentle, soothing, and perfectly balanced; whoever it touches will feel their mind and spirit become deeply settled, harmonious, and at peace.
If a person aligns their every word and deed with virtue, they too will naturally emit a fragrance of virtue and the fragrance is spread everywhere in the Western Pure Land. Because fragrance embodies countless virtues, offering incense holds profound meaning. Namo Amituofo also offers this fragrance of virtue to the beings of the Western Pure Land to keep their afflictions and habits from arising.
The various fragrances of the worldly realm are either manufactured by people or emitted by flowers.
Flowers belong to the beings of the six realms of rebirth, while humans possess a shaped by past deeds. Infused with subjectivity, attachment, and biased views, the scents produced in this world are neither purely clean nor entirely wholesome.
However, the 'Gentle and Elegant Fragrance of Virtue' in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss flows directly from Namo Amituofo’s self-nature. This fragrance emanates from a body that is pure, untainted, and supremely wholesome; therefore, it is fundamentally different from any worldly scent. Flowing directly from his body, it allows all who smell it to receive its profound benefits.
In this world, if a practitioner is endowed with abundant merits and , and if their heart, vows, and actions align completely with Namo Amitufo’s, their body will also naturally release this gentle and elegant fragrance of virtue. This allows those who smell it to naturally be freed from their worldly defilements and habits, filling their hearts with . This is Practitioner Su of Hsiang Kuang.
