The ten directions refer to the four cardinal directions of east, west, south, and north.
If you add the northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest, you have eight directions.
Adding the zenith and nadir makes ten directions, which can be called the Ten Directions of the Realm, covering all space within the Dharma Realm.
Righteous beings refers to Bodhisattvas.
If they are great beings who enter the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss's Land of Real Reward,
they break through one level of confusion and afflictions, realise one portion of the ,
and eventually, upon breaking through the final level of confusion and afflictions, enter the Land of Eternally Quiescent Light.
This is a world of pure, luminous spirit; it is the presentation of natural principles and the path of a practitioner who is grounded, moving step by step.
"I know the wishes of all righteous beings who come from the ten directions."
For the Bodhisattvas from the Ten Directions of the Dharma Realm who are able to reach the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss,
Namo Amituofo knows what their wishes are. Namo Amituofo has divine sight and hearing and can perceive everything.
Therefore, when a arrives at the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, before they even speak, Namo Amituofo already knows the purpose of their arrival.
Thus, Namo Amituofo expounds the Dharma they wish to ask about and addresses their wishes, or bestows a prediction of their future Buddhahood.
In the sutra, it mentions the "sixteen righteous beings,"
who attended the assembly when Shakyamuni Buddha expounded the Infinite Life Sutra. These sixteen are listed as representatives;
in reality, countless Bodhisattvas and great beings of the Dharma Body participated in this assembly.
These Bodhisattvas and great beings of the Dharma Body came from countless, immeasurable Buddha lands in the Dharma Realm.
This shows that the audience for this sutra, besides Ananda and Maitreya Bodhisattva,
also included those with the potential of the sixteen righteous beings, whose achievements allow them to realise their true nature and attain Buddhahood.
This shows that this sutra is propagated in every Buddha land,
because it was accepted and practised by those who attended the assembly at that time.
Those who have attained Buddhahood by practising according to this sutra are scattered in every corner of the Dharma Realm,
in every Buddha land.
At this time, Namo Amituofo abides at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia, manifesting the magnificence of this place.
There are also righteous beings from the ten directions visiting here.
The human world is represented by the fourfold assembly; this is a magnificent and rare period.
You should be diligent and seize this excellent opportunity to realise your true nature and attain Buddhahood.
