Teachings by Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju:
Those who have words to say keep their minds constantly turning, thinking about what they want to say,
and thus their thoughts move, and their hearts move as well.
As soon as a thought is initiated, it is ; there is the distinction between good karma and negative karma.
Those who have no words to say do not need to think, nor do they need to think about what to say,
they do not stir evil thoughts, and their hearts do not fluctuate.
Whether having words or no words,
it is not as good as the Holy Name "Namo Amituofo," one phrase after another, continuous and uninterrupted.
Only Namo Amituofo, Namo Amituofo, is considered a pure thought,
pure thoughts have no distinction between good karma and negative karma.
Among the three karmas of Body, Speech, and Mind, the one people most easily create is the karma of speech,
one must be cautious not to create the karma of speech: double-tongued speech, harsh speech, lying, and frivolous speech.
A single word, whether intentional or unintentional, if it causes others to develop afflictions,
and to develop anger, one is also creating karma, hurting others and oneself.
Those who are self-aware can still stop creating karma;
those who are not self-aware continue to create karma without end, and subsequently, the of suffering follows.
For those who have attained , if there are words to be said, it is for the sake of beings, not for oneself.
Without gain or loss, good or bad, one can observe the capacity of others to speak, saying just the right amount.
For those who have a sense of self, they tightly grasp their own and ,
making it difficult to be flexible or to consider others,
if they have words to say, they make themselves the axis, which easily hurts others and themselves; this is a manifestation of karma.
If the words are positive and helpful to others, and they are willing to listen,
and are willing to accept the counseling or suggestions, then one may speak.
If the words are negative and not helpful to others, or even cause anger and dissatisfaction,
and they cannot listen, then do not speak.
One should know that being compassionate and tolerant is the way of a wise person.
