Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju's teachings:
Granting passage is like undergoing layers of inspection when passing through customs;
only when no anomalies are found and one is granted passage to pass through this point can one enter the next area.
Granting passage is like the various of practice,
based on the precepts left behind by Shakyamuni Buddha,
upheld through the accumulated experience of patriarchs and venerable masters and the lineage of precept masters.
If one can follow them, then passage is granted and it is permissible;
if one cannot follow them, then it is a precept, which should be upheld and not violated.
Precepts are to protect the practitioner from creating negative ,
and from falling into the three lower realms to suffer retribution, such as the extreme suffering of the hells.
If one can do it, then passage is granted; if one cannot, then it should be a precept.
Whether in customs or in practice, please do not harbour any wishful thinking or take chances.
In Buddhism, every thought and intention creates karma, and the storage in the
is clear and distinct.
If one commits an offence in the world and takes a chance by doing it without being discovered,
in the laws of the underworld, it is clearly visible.
Because the laws of the underworld are based on the Alaya ,
to see if the situation at that time involved any violations?
Whether passage should not have been granted, yet one took a chance and passed through?
Or whether a precept should have been upheld, but one violated it without being discovered?
These situations may allow one to avoid punishment and continue living in the world,
but in the laws of the underworld, it is clearly understood and will result in heavier penalties.
Penalties are increased due to the various negative karma created by taking chances to pass through and by violating the precepts.
Therefore, one should observe the regulations for granting passage and the precepts; do what is permissible, and if it is not permissible, then treat it as a precept.
This is how a wise person and a practitioner should be.
It is also the method to maintain the purification of Body, Speech, and Mind, and to keep the heart clear and bright.
Of the Three Learnings of Precepts, Samadhi, and Wisdom, upholding the Precepts is paramount.
Be disciplined and self-regulated; do not violate the precepts.
Those who uphold the precepts strictly can attain meditative concentration, and after concentration, Wisdom (Prajna) will manifest.
This is the true benefit of the Buddha’s teachings; one must truly practise it to receive the benefits.
