The Wheel-Turning Sage King

Teachings from Namo Amituofo:

The Wheel-Turning Sage King is the most supreme, virtuous, and benevolent ruler in the human realm.

In the Infinite Life Sutra, it is mentioned that the Wheel-Turning Sage King possesses the most majestic appearance. If an earthly emperor were compared to a Wheel-Turning Sage King, that emperor would appear lowly, like a destitute beggar standing beside a monarch. By comparing an emperor to a poor beggar and the Wheel-Turning Sage King to an emperor, this stark contrast highlights just how extraordinarily majestic the Wheel-Turning Sage King's presence truly is.

Yet, if the Wheel-Turning Sage King is compared to the Trayastrimsa Heaven King, his appearance would seem inferior. This reveals the supreme majesty of the Trayastrimsa Heavenly King and the relative inferiority of the Wheel-Turning Sage King. In turn, the King of the Trayastrimsa Heaven cannot even begin to compare to the King of the Sixth Heaven. Furthermore, the King of the Sixth Heaven is completely eclipsed by the Bodhisattvas and Sravakas (voice-hearers) in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss;  they cannot be compared by any measure or factor. Through this layer-by-layer comparison, one can appreciate the unfathomable, sublime appearance of the assembly in the Western Pure Land, as well as the inconceivable, meritorious splendor of that land itself.

The Wheel-Turning Sage King is a wise being blessed with great worldly rewards and a magnificent countenance. He wields a sacred wheel as a precious treasure to subdue demons and govern the four directions. Under his rule, the people live joyful, harmonious, worry-free, and prosperous lives. When a Wheel-Turning Sage King governs the world, there are no wars, external conflicts, or anxieties brought about by robbery, and wealth is always abundant. Even so, the Wheel-Turning Sage King and his subjects remain sentient beings bound to the six realms of cyclic rebirth.

The Wheel-Turning Sage King guides his country and its people using the Buddha’s teachings, acting as a protector of the Dharma. He enables his people to understand the law of cause and effect(karma), instilling a deep faith that good actions bring good rewards and evil actions bring evil retribution, allowing people to naturally self-regulate. This is the root cause of the nation's enduring stability and long-lasting peace.

King Ashoka of ancient India was one such Dharma protector who established the Buddha’s teachings as the law of the land, governing the empire through the Dharma; hence he was revered as a Wheel-Turning Sage King.

A truly wise and enlightened ruler should guide his people to practice the mindfulness of Buddha, chanting the Buddha's name. This helps them not only to dwell securely in the Dharma during this lifetime—free from the anxieties of old age and sickness—but also ensures their spirits find a sublime destination in the next life: entry into the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.

At this moment, if there were a wise ruler as enlightened as the Wheel-Turning Sage King, upon learning that Namo Amituofo is currently residing in the human world at Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Goombungee, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, he would surely come to seek the Dharma and become a pillar of its protection and propagation. He would also perform Chao Du to liberate deceased beings into the Western Dharma-Nature Land, so they may reach the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. In doing so,

he would prepare himself and all the people under heaven for rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, breaking free from the cycle of reincarnation forever. This is precisely what a wise and noble ruler, akin to a Wheel-Turning Sage King, would do.
