Interview with Wang Xiaomo (Father of China's Airborne Early Warning Aircraft)

Brief: Winner of the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Known as the Father of China's Airborne Early Warning Aircraft. Wang Xiaomo led his team to rely on independent innovation to develop China's first generation of airborne early warning aircraft (such as the KJ-2000 and KJ-200), completely reversing the passive situation of national air defence and creating the all-seeing eye for the nation's air force.

Wang Xiaomo:

Namo Amituofo, the Western Land of Dharma Nature is truly a wonderful world! I feel very stable and peaceful here, without any afflictions, and I do not think of the sad things from the past. I always keep a smile here, and I am always chanting the Buddha-name Namo Amituofo.

Today, I received an interview notice from the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Australia, and I am very happy. I have been guided to the Western Land of Dharma Nature for quite some time, and having seen so many wondrous changes, combined with my own experiences, I think I have much to share with everyone!

When I had a human body, I was a person who was good with words, and people said I was multi-talented; perhaps that was true. Although I was once called the Father of China's Airborne Early Warning Aircraft, which sounds like dry scientific knowledge, there is no need for everyone to be surprised. We who research national defence science have different research projects, and the airborne early warning aircraft was the project I was responsible for at the time.

Those who know me, Wang Xiaomo, should know that I do not care about these titles. I have always been a pragmatic and carefree person. To me, the most important thing is whether what I do can be applied to the nation's defence cause and truly help the country and the people; as for those titles, they are merely names bestowed upon me by the country in recognition of my contributions, so there is no need to take them too much to heart.

When I was young, I was indeed multi-talented. In addition to having great curiosity and being full of ideals regarding the fields of science and national defence research, I could also sing a good Peking opera. In my spare time, I enjoyed playing the erhu and singing Peking opera in my room, which was a joy during my difficult schooling days.

My path of study and research was not entirely smooth, because the era we lived in was always full of many changes. Having experienced war since I was young, I deeply understood that if a country does not have strong national defence power, it cannot truly protect the safety of the country and its people. Even if we do not intend to use national defence capabilities as weapons for killing, possessing strong national defence allows other countries to not dare to invade at will; this is the best way to defend the country and resist enemies.

I, Wang Xiaomo, have moved forward with such ideals throughout my life. After graduating from university, I officially entered the research institute of the Ministry of National Defence to begin my scientific research career. The common name for an airborne early warning aircraft is radar, which is also a name everyone is generally familiar with. Therefore, in the following interview, I will continue to use the word radar to express the project I researched.

At that time, the research work was carried out in the deep mountains and forests of Guizhou. This was because the situation was unstable at the time; if high-secret projects were researched in first or second-tier cities, they would be easily detected and exposed, posing a great risk to national defence. We who do scientific research had to hide in remote areas with no signals and scarce supplies. Many people even signed life-and-death pledges before going. Everyone did not dare to think too much about all this; relying on a heart to serve the country, we rushed straight into the hinterland of Guizhou.

In that difficult environment, a major event also occurred—the Cultural Revolution. At that time, many scientists and engineers were denounced. I was assigned to a secret computer room to be responsible for cleaning. Although it was a great shock to me at the time, I later discovered that this was a blessing in disguise. Being in that environment for a long time, out of boredom, I began to explore computers. The computers at that time were not the size of the computers on people's desks today, but were as large as an entire room, and they were very difficult to learn. During the few years I was there, in addition to cleaning, I studied diligently and gradually became a computer expert.

Those years of cleaning were truly not spent in vain, which gives me great comfort. Later, I applied the knowledge I learned to the research of radar and achieved outstanding results. Therefore, I have no doubts about my fate at that time; I think those were things that were meant to happen according to Causal Conditions. At that time, many of us scientists and engineers held very pure hearts: wherever we needed to go, we went, and we were always able to find a way forward.

Everything that followed was also very satisfactory. Our group, through closer research, created one miracle after another in national defence. These radar technologies were very advanced for that time, but they were also built with our hard work, step by step, over many years.

These radars were installed on many large aircraft, circling in the sky, and could detect the movements of enemies hundreds of miles away. Whether there were bombers or any fighter jets flying towards Chinese territory, we could know it like the back of our hand. With radar, it was as if eyes had been installed for the fighter jets in the sky, enabling them to observe in all directions and know where the enemy was going. The fighter jets would feel more secure and at ease, would not put themselves in danger and difficulty, and would not make unnecessary attacks.

This is something I am proud of. But I never thought that the very heart I had when making these inventions, if slightly deviated, would become the main reason for me to fall into hell later.

After I left the human world, I really came to the heart-gouging hell. It was a very, very painful place, and I spent three years there, suffering endless misery. I was puzzled at the time, wondering why I had spent my whole life doing things for the country and the people, not daring to have too much time for myself, and having no opportunity to do any wrong things, yet I still had to suffer the torments of hell.

On the Western Land of Dharma Nature, I have seen many famous Chinese people like me who have also been to hell to receive retribution. Here, I constantly chant the holy name of Namo Amituofo and listen earnestly to Practitioner Su giving Dharma talks. After a period of purification, I realised that I must have done things that went against the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way during my lifetime, which is why I had the retribution of hell. The laws of karma and cause and effect are very clear and fair, and it is impossible to deceive anyone at all.

As a researcher at the time, although I performed very excellently in the field of research and everything seemed very beautiful, in our research team, besides me, there were other very excellent students, and we all worked together. Although I did not deliberately show it, I had felt jealous of the research results and works of others. This jealousy was the reason why I fell into hell later.

I hoped in my heart to achieve certain accomplishments, although my original intention was truly to serve the country. But in the process, some of the personality traits I had carried throughout my many lives surfaced. At that time, I had not received Buddhist education, and these personality traits spread unscrupulously, which led to the result I had later.

On the surface, no one could see it; everyone always thought I was that very carefree and happy person on the outside. I never really revealed these thoughts to anyone. But I was indeed polluted in my heart because of this character. As long as there is jealousy, a person's heart becomes narrow and resentful.

In a state where my character was polluted, all the research I conducted could not reach perfection. There might have been some subtle deviations in my character, and I would be blinded by some obstacles. Honestly, these thoughts did not seem very powerful, but the impact caused by the accumulation of these subtle thoughts was still very huge.

Of course, in terms of behaviour, I did not dare to take any action or destroy the work of others; that was absolutely impossible to happen.

Having come to the Western Land of Dharma Nature, I repent from the bottom of my heart for everything I did before. Everyone was doing good things, and everyone was doing good things for the construction of the country and the cause of national defence. It was only because I had such pollution in my heart and had not received Buddhist education, and did not know how to correct it, that I followed this thought, which caused my soul to have already gone to hell to receive retribution at that time.

I once deeply regretted my actions, knowing that if I could have had a broader mind, been willing to share all my achievements with others, been more willing to accept the opinions of others, and acted in the world more naturally and freely, I think I would have definitely been able to avoid the retribution of hell. Moreover, uniting the strength of everyone could have achieved synergy, allowed for fuller development, and accelerated the progress of our national defence cause.

Now that I am on the Western Land of Dharma Nature, listening to Practitioner Su giving Dharma talks, Practitioner Su has been saying that having a personality is just about fussing over the body.

I understood that these thoughts of mine at that time were actually fussing over the body, actually thinking for the sake of this body of mine, and the distance to spiritual elevation became even more distant. Before, I did not understand Buddhist education and thought that all this was reasonable.

I did not expect that the deviation of my mental notes would cause the immeasurable and boundless karmic creditors within my body to wake up and seek revenge on me, yet I knew nothing about it. If they carried resentment, they might even file a complaint against me, which is why I went to report to hell after I died.

The Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way taught by Buddhist education are the Right Way that has always existed, not rules deliberately invented by anyone. There are no legal clauses on record, but they are the truth of facts that everyone will definitely understand in the process of learning Buddhist education.

Buddhist education is very simple; it teaches everyone how to achieve selflessness and no-self, to have no self and only act for the sake of all sentient beings. This heart must truly conform to the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way.

If we think of our own interests when doing things and develop discriminations towards others, this is already not in line with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. If everyone looks at the two great Buddhas, Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su, they will know that they are the true followers of the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. It can be said that only by fully complying with and strictly practising them can one have the ability to practise, realise one's true nature and attain Buddhahood, and gain the ability to save beings.

And we ordinary people, many times, will not conform to the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way in subtle places—perhaps in behaviour, or in thoughts, or in the words expressed.

Therefore, the importance of Buddhist education lies in its ability to help everyone adjust their character, allowing the heart of every person, which was originally covered with a layer of dust, to have the possibility of being washed clean and purified, becoming pure and Good. This is very important.

In my subsequent life, all developments were considered very smooth. Although I had had these bad thoughts, I still held a heart to do things for the country and, together with many people, did a good job in radar research, and thus received the recognition of the country.

When I entered my later years, I also received the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award. For those who research science and technology, this award is the highest honour given by the country. At that time, I was also very surprised that I could receive such affirmation from the country. This stemmed from my very pure heart of wanting to do things for the country, without any desire to obtain any reward. Therefore, when I received this award, I also actively donated a lot of the prize money to scientific research projects and people in need; I did not dare to take too much for myself.

In the social environment at that time, many of us scientists experienced all kinds of hardships before we achieved various breakthroughs in scientific research. We grew up in an era of war and chaos, and we had extraordinary perseverance and persistence on the path of study. From a young age, we established strong discipline, had strict self-discipline, and had a very firm heart to serve the country.

Especially many scientists of our generation experienced the Cultural Revolution. Many people were involved in this catastrophe, were denounced, and experienced all kinds of hardships. Only a very small number of people had better luck and could escape unscathed, or receive special protection from the country.

However, more scientists and engineers were assigned to other grassroots organisations to do manual labour, cleaning, and other work because of the denunciations, and I was one of them. This was also a place that greatly tempered people's character, letting us do odd jobs and live a life almost isolated from the world.

Everyone experienced such a movement, but their persistence in scientific research became even firmer. After the Cultural Revolution ended, everyone had the opportunity to continue to devote themselves to research work and did not dare to rest. Because we knew that everything we were doing concerned the safety of the country, the stability of the lives of the people, and the peaceful development of the country. Therefore, everyone held a heart of being ready to die for the cause and carried out this series of research work.

Now, the bitterness has ended and the sweetness has begun. I have come to this Buddha-land, the Western Land of Dharma Nature, and my heart is very stable and peaceful, because I know that the Buddha has saved us and also saved thousands upon thousands of Chinese people.

Practitioner Su has already saved over two hundred modern Chinese celebrities through Chao Du. Furthermore, the extensive Chao Du work that Practitioner Su has conducted across China has saved immeasurable and uncountable spirit realm beings to the Western Land of Dharma Nature. After witnessing this great feat, we are all deeply moved; we never knew that a human being in this world could achieve such skills.

Practitioner Su is eighty-three years of age, yet he works as if one day were two, never fearing hardship. He performs Chao Du on a large scale across China, Japan, Southeast Asia, and other regions, and has also performed Chao Du for immeasurable and boundless demon crowds, without a moment of rest. Practitioner Su’s great compassionate vow and his vast actions in saving beings have moved Namo Amituofo to reside at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Australia, where the Western Land of Dharma Nature has been established to save countless suffering beings.

Many years ago, Practitioner Su began to remove beings from within people’s bodies to help alleviate their physical pain. At the same time, he is able to travel to the heavens, the Milky Way, the universe, and all other spaces within the Dharma Realm to perform Chao Du for immeasurable and boundless beings and demon crowds.

It is only because Practitioner Su has accumulated vast merits that he is able to save such immeasurable and boundless beings. Here, Wang Xiaomo sincerely expresses his gratitude to Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su.

In the past, we always thought about repaying the kindness of our nation and our land. Now, having arrived at the Western Land of Dharma Nature, it is Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su who have given us the opportunity for rebirth. Moreover, to be born in such a pure, bright, quiet, and peaceful Western Land of Dharma Nature—what immense blessings one must have to arrive here! My heart is filled with endless gratitude. I am grateful for the infinitely vast grace of the Buddha.

Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su have truly let go of the self entirely; there is no self, only sentient beings, and they are saving immeasurable and boundless beings and demon crowds at every moment. We deeply cherish everything that Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su have done, and our gratitude is beyond words. At the same time, I silently make a great vow in my heart to learn well from Practitioner Su, to cultivate great compassion, and to chant Namo Amituofo all the way, hoping that one day I may reach such a height.

From the perspective of the spirit, to achieve spiritual growth, one must let go of all feelings and thoughts related to this body. One must empty oneself, with no past, not a single attachment, and no limitations of time or space—only the focus on helping beings leave suffering and gain happiness.

This is a skill that can only be achieved through extremely powerful compassion and vow power. This skill is the technology of technologies. With pure and good mental notes, Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su use unconventional and varied methods to save sentient beings. Practitioner Su possesses the Divine Foot and can travel through all spaces, coming and going freely. He uses various highly creative methods, adapting to causal conditions to help all sentient beings with karmic affinity to be saved.

For example, consider the well-known "Namo Amituofo" billboards. These billboards are not merely display boards for promoting Namo Amituofo; they are blessed with the majestic power and merits of Namo Amituofo. They shine with light, which spirit realm beings can see and are attracted to, leading them to the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre to be saved and sent to the Western Land of Dharma Nature. Today, there are various "Namo Amituofo" billboards of all sizes across China, allowing many Chinese spirits to come to the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre to receive Chao Du. Every such billboard radiates the golden light of the Buddha. We hope that there will be more and more such billboards in China, especially large ones, to save sentient beings.

Currently, under the wish of Practitioner Su, "Namo Amituofo" billboards have been established in nine countries around the world. The number of beings saved is countless.

Practitioner Su always says that the beings coming to surrender are like a flood, entering the space of the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre before being sent by Practitioner Su to the Western Land of Dharma Nature. Furthermore, in the sky above the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Australia, one can always see many beings and demon crowds arriving in dense numbers, seeking Chao Du or surrender. The clouds in the sky can turn black or grey in an instant because many demon crowds are among them. Yet, when Practitioner Su strikes the large bell, the beings and demon crowds are sent to the Western Land of Dharma Nature, and the sky quickly returns to its former clarity. All these changes are truly inconceivable!

Practitioner Su’s very special Chao Du skills are truly enviable. It is a pity that when I had a human body, I did not know the Buddha’s teachings, did not believe in Buddhist education, and had no religious faith at all. At that time, this was something I could never have imagined, nor would I have been willing to believe.

Now that I have arrived at the Western Land of Dharma Nature and have achieved spiritual elevation, I can see all of this clearly. Therefore, I am very eager to tell all my fellow Chinese about this, hoping that everyone can come to know the Buddha and know that Namo Amituofo resides at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Australia. If all the people of China knew this and were willing to come with a humble and positive heart to learn from the Buddha, to practise well, and to use their own power, they would receive the Buddha’s blessings. With fierce diligence, there will certainly be a day of success! This can not only help the vast number of Chinese people resolve the great matters of birth, aging, sickness, and death, but it can also carry forward the great Dharma of Namo Amituofo throughout the world.
