Teachings by Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju:
Offering means to respectfully provide and support.
When making an offering, do so with a heart of sincerity, respect, humility, and gratitude, which also serves to subdue one's own arrogance.
For example, by making offerings to those of true virtue who practise, you enable their spiritual progress is guaranteed to grow and achieve spiritual success, thereby broadly saving heavenly beings, humans, yourself, and all beings; or, to increase the provisions for your own practice to realise your true nature and attain Buddhahood, you make offerings to the Buddha or , the Three Jewels—the Buddha, the Teachings, and the Sangha Community, and true spiritual friends, receiving the blessing of the power of merit and majestic power of the Buddha or Bodhisattva. You are also grateful to the Buddha or Bodhisattva, the Three Jewels, and true spiritual friends for giving us the opportunity to listen to sutras and hear the ; parents and teachers are our fields of ; making offerings to them is like planting seeds in the field of blessings within our hearts. We are grateful to our parents and teachers for allowing us to plant these seeds of blessings.
Generosity (Giving) means to distribute and bestow, in order to help those in need. There is the giving of wealth, the giving of the Dharma, and the giving of fearlessness.
In giving, if one gives without attachment to appearances, what is gained is the power of merit; if one gives with attachment to appearances, what is gained is Blessings.
The power of merit is an infinite and immeasurable Dharma wealth; Blessings are finite and measurable.
Regardless of whether it is an offering or an act of generosity, the state of one's heart is what matters most.
Having this human body, we should cherish it and perform various kinds of offerings, such as offerings of flowers, incense, banners, lamps, fruits, and so on.
Among all offerings, the offering of the Dharma is the supreme one.
There are also those who offer their own bodies to the Buddha, such as burning the arm as an offering, to express their firm determination to seek the Dharma.
In this life of practice, having a body is precious; use this temporary body to cultivate the truth, so that the achievements of this life can lead to and the attainment of Buddhahood.
A Buddha is one who has perfected self-awakening, the awakening of others, and the practice of awakening.
By broadly saving those connected by karmic affinity and rescuing countless suffering beings, the offering of the Dharma is therefore the supreme one.
