The Promise of the Infinite Sutra
In the twenty-fifth chapter of The Infinite Sutra (The Buddha Speaks the , Infinite Life, Adornment, Purity, Impartiality, and Sutra), which discusses the true causes for rebirth in the , the Buddha provides us with a vital instruction:
If one can contemplate the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss and Namo Amituofo day and night, reflecting upon the Buddha's boundless merits and magnificent dignity, one will surely find the way. By sincerely taking refuge, bowing in , and offering one's heart to the Buddha, one will reach the end of this life without fear, terror, or confusion. In that state of clarity, one will immediately be reborn in the Buddha's land.
The Constant Practice of Devotion
This passage clearly tells us that the foundation for a peaceful passing lies in our daily actions. It is not enough to simply wish for a good outcome; we must cultivate the seeds of goodness in our everyday lives. To achieve this, we must maintain our focus 24/7, from the brightness of the day to the stillness of the night.
During every moment of our lives, our hearts should be filled with:
- The presence of Namo Amituofo.
- The magnificent merits and dignity of the Buddha.
- The sincere act of chanting the name of Namo Amituofo.
- The humble practice of prostration and offering.
When we dedicate our entire being to this practice, we are building the necessary momentum to face our final moments with a calm and steady heart.
The Danger of a Distracted Mind
Why is this focus so essential? Because all our efforts in this world are ultimately aimed at the magnificent result of rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. If we have worked diligently throughout our lives but allow ourselves to fall into states of shock, terror, or mental confusion at the moment of death, we risk losing our way. Such confusion pulls us back into the cycle of being reincarnated, and we must ask ourselves: if we miss this opportunity, how many more lifetimes will we have to wait before we can again seek the path to the Western Pure Land?
Walking the Path of Truth
To ensure that our minds remain free from confusion, we must protect our hearts every single day. We must ensure that our thoughts and actions remain aligned with the right path. This means we must strictly observe the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way in all that we do.
Only by living in accordance with these sacred standards can we maintain a righteous and stable mind, even when faced with the transition of death. It is this state of mind—free from the turbulence of confusion—that allows us to fulfill our deepest vow: to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Let us therefore cherish every moment, keeping our hearts pure and our focus unwavering upon Namo Amituofo.
