This is a record of an interview with the spirit of Helen Keller, who sought at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. She now resides in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This account reflects upon her life approximately fifty-eight years ago. Recorded by Fa Ning, on May 22, 2026.
Helen Keller speaks:
". This is the first time that I, Helen Keller, have ever spoken the six-character name 'Namo Amituofo' aloud before the world.
Today is a day of great . I have spent ten years in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, and I wish to share a report with all of you. Ha! It is truly a remarkable experience. When I was in the human world, I gave many reports and speeches. As a philanthropist, I travelled to many different countries, speaking before all kinds of people, advocating for the disabled, and changing the quality of life for many. This is why people held me in their hearts as if I were an angel.
During my decades in the human world, the impression people had of me was that I was a blind and deaf person. It was only after extremely arduous and diligent study that I learned how to speak, how to express my own thoughts, and how to write article after article. In the society of over a hundred years ago, learning to do this in such a difficult environment was no small feat. Of course, I had many noble people to help me throughout my life, which allowed me to stand before the world as a disabled person and bring a little comfort and encouragement to many children who shared my fate.
Ten years ago, I was in a vast, boundless darkness when I suddenly saw a beam of light. This was a light I had never seen in all my eighty-some years as Helen Keller, nor in the many decades I spent as a lonely, helpless wandering spirit.
When I was in the human world, I was a blind person through and through. Apart from a few faint memories of light and brightness from when I was very young, I could barely remember any colours or images from the world. After I passed away, I remained a blind ghost. In that dark space, I could only use my keen awareness to sense everything around me.
But ten years ago, when that light shone upon me, I first felt a warm force, sensing the heat and energy of the light. At the time, my vision had not yet fully recovered, but as the light shone on me again and again, my eyes suddenly brightened, and I was able to see this light clearly.
I was startled, for it had been such a long, long time since I had seen anything. When I suddenly saw, I felt immense joy, thinking that this must be a force of salvation. I even thought that it must be God or Jesus coming to save me, because during my days in the ghost realm, I had not forgotten to pray to God and Jesus as I did when I was in the human world.
However, this time, after I entered the light and arrived in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, I slowly came to understand that I had come to a world of the Buddha. I was a bit confused at the time; was this towering figure before me not God or Jesus? But the message I received was not that. Because I had never seen an image of a Buddha, nor did I know what a Buddha looked like, I knew that this must be a very exalted figure in the spiritual world.
At that time, with a heart full of gratitude and joy, I listened to the guidance given to me by the Buddha before me. The Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss is a world without language barriers. As an American, I had learned English and the language of the deaf and mute, but here in the Western Pure Land, it is Namo Amituofo who teaches all beings. When the Buddha gives a lecture, no language medium is needed; we naturally communicate heart-to-heart, allowing every being in the Western Land to understand what the Buddha is saying. Language is no longer a barrier, and I have completely recovered my sight and hearing. What also surprised me was that this world is so bright and equal! It made me feel that all the baggage I had learned and known in the past could be put down at this moment. There are no more constraints from the past, and I can understand everything I see and hear with such ease and freedom.
The Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss is a world where every request is answered. Whatever I think of, or whatever questions or confusion I have in my heart, I can immediately receive a true answer. That answer is very comforting and soothing. This is the Ultimate Vow made by Amitabha Buddha, allowing all beings in the Western Land to enjoy the same abilities and supernatural powers as he does.
As I gradually came to understand this world, I felt not only great gratitude and respect for Namo Amituofo, but also a heart full of gratitude for Practitioner Su in the human world. I quickly understood the meaning of the Buddha, and I also knew that the Buddha is the role model for all beings. If everyone learns from the Buddha how to become a Buddha, they can, like the Buddha, lead many, many beings to this place to attain eternal life, without having to suffer the pain of the six realms of rebirth.
In my previous Christian education, there was no mention of the six realms of rebirth, and I did not understand these principles. I only knew that people could go to heaven or fall into hell. I worked very hard throughout my life, and I also carried a heart of gratitude to give back to society, helping many, many people. I thought I would surely go to heaven, but I did not expect that after death, my world would still be so grey and dim.
At that time, I did not know this was the world of the ghost realm. I thought I was still the same 'me' as when I was alive. I could see nothing, it seemed no one knew me, and I did not know anyone. When I was in the human world, I could not see or hear my whole life, but the other parts of my six roots were still very strong. My sensitivity in terms of touch and heart-to-heart feeling was very keen. During those decades in the ghost realm, without the opportunity to interact with others, I lived very lonely and very painfully, always hoping in my heart that all of this would pass quickly.
Ultimately, this was also because when I was a human, I came into the world carrying a full body of . I did not manage to change my personality for the better, and I could not achieve purity and absolute Goodness. From a young age, many karmic beings came to interfere. Although I was always praised by the world, and everyone thought that my firm heart could do many good deeds to give back to society despite my disability, I could not help but have a little bit of arrogance in my heart; I did not achieve true humility. My life was considered very exciting, and in the ups and downs, I did many good deeds, but there were also some things that were not in accordance with the , not in accordance with the Universal Principles, Truth, and the Right Path. This was something I did not know at the time.
These subtle things did not affect the fact that for most of my life, I was still able to maintain an optimistic, progressive, upward, cheerful, and sincere heart, serving those around me, whether they were disabled or the general public.
People might be curious: why was I, a philanthropist who did good deeds all my life, unable to ascend to heaven in the end?
The answer is simple: I did not let go of my attachments; I was still clutching onto this 'me'. Although I did many good deeds and had a great influence, making many people moved by my optimistic story and changing their attitude towards life, becoming more cheerful and joyful, I only solved some of the physical pain of people; I could not truly explore the anxiety and needs of , mind, and spirit.
My life was not as perfect as everyone imagined; I was just an ordinary person. I would make mistakes, and there would be times when I could not let go or would hold on tightly; or there were various entanglements and attachments with others, whether it was family, friendship, or love. These thoughts had all appeared in my heart.
Everyone always remembers my very kind side, but they do not know many of my other sides that were unknown to others. At that time, under the education of society, although I was not like others who were exposed to the concepts instilled by the many external polluted worlds, I spent my whole life studying various books, learning a lot of knowledge from books and the education passed on by the people around me.
So, when I was in my twenties, I was admitted to a college at Harvard University, and my life was very smooth. Starting my life story from that time seems a bit too early; I should honestly account for my story from childhood to adulthood. Let everyone truly understand what kind of influence and cause and effect were involved in my life as Helen Keller. I think this might be something everyone is very curious about.
Well, then I will start from the beginning!
When I was very young, I was a healthy and normal child, but at nineteen months old, I contracted an acute illness. After I recovered, I was left with a defect that I could never turn back from for the rest of my life, which was that I completely became a deaf-mute and also became a blind person. When I was a child, I did not understand why my world seemed different from others. But before I could explore this point, I could still quietly live my own little life.
But later, I gradually discovered that everything I wanted to express could not be understood, and everything I wanted to know could not be answered. My heart gradually began to panic, as if there were many lively things happening around me, but my world was so quiet. Although my world was one of silence, from the many vibrations of the objects around me and the touch of my body, I could know that this world was not quiet; only I was the one who belonged to the silence. At that time, I began to grow up, and my heart began to become fragile. I tried very hard to feel everything around me, however, in one collapse after another, I gradually understood that I seemed to be in a situation completely different from others."
"At that time, I certainly did not know what state I was in, but after arriving in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, I can see it clearly. From a very young age, countless beings within my body had already awakened to seek revenge. A large part of this life was about repaying debts. There are many disabled people in the world like me, all carrying deep spiritual obstacles. From the perspective of the Buddha's teachings, this is one of the sufferings of the human world. It was precisely because the negative karma I created in the past had not been cleared that, despite having a good family and life circumstances, this inescapable defect was destined to be something I had to face, overcome, and resolve with these beings throughout my life."
"However, I never learned the Buddha's teachings from start to finish, nor did I know that in true Buddhist education, one can understand that these illnesses are not external, but imprints brought from the depths of one's own soul. The beings seeking revenge chose to make me lose my sight and hearing during an illness. This was the negative karma accumulated over many lifetimes, where I had obstructed others—whether on the path of seeking the Dharma or education—obstructing them from moving forward or receiving the inspiration of wisdom, casting a shadow over their lives. So, it was all self-inflicted! I didn't understand this principle before. When I was young, I only knew how to vent with anger, not knowing how to resolve things with these beings, nor even the fact that they existed within me."
"Fortunately, having created such negative causes, I had also created many good ones, so I received support from many noble people in this life, especially my mentor, Teacher Anne Sullivan, whom everyone knows so well and who was inseparable from my life. She had similar circumstances to mine and was also abandoned by others due to her own defects. Thus, she devoted her life to me without complaint, and we understood and cherished each other, accompanying one another for a lifetime. She had some visual impairments, but she could still see the world, so she would convey much information to me and tell me everything she heard. This was a very miraculous relationship. I only later realized the karmic connection behind us, why we could be as close as mother and daughter, or sisters, for a lifetime, taking care of each other through these long decades."
"This was the greatest noble person I ever met. Without her, there would be no Helen Keller later on, no name for the whole world to remember. I met her when I was seven or eight years old. She entered my world as a tutor, teaching me to read and understand everything around me. Because she had her own experience and learning techniques, she knew how to help a child with such severe defects walk out of her own world and recognize the vast world outside. Causal conditions are so ingenious; all the karma in my life was written in the book of my life. All the good and bad circumstances I encountered were destined ; it was just that in this life, I had to use this body to repay my sins or experience the fruits of good deeds."
"I had no concept of cause and effect at the time, so although I walked through the world with a kind heart and tried hard to help others solve problems like mine, allowing them to walk out of their predicaments, I could never give them practical help from start to finish, nor let them understand the causes and consequences of all things. This is a profound regret in my life."
"People were very curious about my world, and I always faced it optimistically, encouraging myself: although I lost many important things, I also gained many experiences that others did not have."
"The perspective I used to help myself walk out of the predicament was more like the way Christians at the time would adopt, which was to help myself build confidence through various means, and to establish the concept that 'I am needed by the world'."
"A large part of my life was dedicated to charitable work, helping children like me walk toward a bright path, and encouraging all those who were persecuted or disabled at the time to have the opportunity to learn and enter university, just like me."
"I was indeed a 'top student' at the time. With the help of many good karmic conditions, I was able to enter Harvard University and become the first deaf-blind person to graduate from a prestigious school. I wasn't mute; I learned language later in life, but the words I spoke were indeed different from others; because I couldn't hear, I relied on the movement of people's mouths and touch to produce one sound after another."
"I couldn't see if the words I typed were correct, and I always needed people to assist me. Although I did many things on the surface and felt genuine joy, there was always a void in my heart, silently expecting that one day a miracle would happen and I would really see the light. But this never happened in my life."
"In the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, I sigh with heartfelt emotion: if I had encountered the Buddha at that time, known about Buddhist education and the laws of karma, and understood that various illnesses of the body were because beings were seeking revenge, I might have been able to use my life story to help many people recognize the true Buddha's teachings."
"I want to tell the world that all karmic conditions and spiritual obstacles can be resolved with a sincere heart. Because the beings are within our own bodies, making us endure all this suffering. But what people don't know is that these beings are suffering even more than us! The beings within us are in the space inside our bodies, relying on memories of us—memories of how we hurt them—they keep reliving all this suffering and want to repay it upon us. But they are just like us, blinded, unable to receive the guidance and learning of true Buddhist education. So, not knowing the truth, they can only take revenge within us with hearts full of resentment. Isn't this a huge suffering?"
"I really didn't know these truths before, so I couldn't find a way to resolve them. Now, because Namo Amituofo is residing in the human world, at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Australia, those who are willing to sincerely seek the Dharma and let go of their body and mind will surely have a day when they can transform these beings, allowing them to resolve their resentment and leave their bodies to follow the Buddha to be reborn in the Western Pure Land. Only beings in the human world can receive Buddhist education, put it into action, change their destiny through their own efforts, and at the same time change the destiny of countless beings within them. The space for those who possess a human body to exert influence is vast; this is true!"
"Once there is no interference or revenge from these beings, this body and the five gradually become lighter, and naturally, all instincts can be restored. There will surely be a day when one can transform and help these beings, allowing them to resolve their resentment and leave the body to follow the Buddha to be reborn in the Western Pure Land. This is because after I was reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, I could see with my own eyes how severe the interference I was under at the time was. There were beings from various batches and different eras coming to seek revenge because of the negative karma I had created in the past. I couldn't understand their pain at the time, and I didn't even know they existed. But looking back now, I want to deeply say 'I'm sorry' to them."
"In my life, I suffered, but I didn't know their suffering, nor could I help them resolve it; this is the sin I should repay. Because I didn't receive the guidance of Buddhist education at the time, I didn't know these truths, and I couldn't help these poor beings through actual physical practice."
"After arriving in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, I, Helen Keller, truly sigh in admiration: the Buddha's teachings can analyze the world of humans and the world of the human body so clearly. The Buddha's teachings tell people that this body is actually a universe, a universe full of beings. On the path of learning, besides understanding oneself, one must also know the relationship between oneself and the beings within one's body, and make great vows to save all beings like the Buddha. First, one must let the beings within one's body obtain deliverance."
"The beings that everyone carries within them are just like me when I became a ghost after death; they have no way to feel good either. After they seek revenge on me, they still have nowhere to go; they just dissipate some of the resentment in their hearts or get some relief, but where do they go from there?"
"When I didn't have this body and became a ghost, they were also ghosts, but in that life, it was impossible for them to take revenge on me again. We were all ghosts; without the body as a tangible thing, they lost the opportunity to take revenge on me."
"I am now very honored to have this opportunity, through the Buddhist affinity I once had, to hear the Buddha's teachings and come to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss; this makes me feel extremely grateful. Besides gratitude, I also silently hope that all the debts I owed in the past can be repaid. This means that all these beings who suffered because of me can have a day of relief from suffering and no longer suffer."
"I participated in many large and small things to help others in my life. Some were gentler, focusing on education; but some were more radical, and I would express more radical views in public. As a leftist at the time, I often stood with disadvantaged groups, striving to speak up for black people or people from all walks of life who were not treated equally at the time. If they could not be treated equally, I would speak for them in a more intense way, hoping to let them receive social attention."
Namo Amituofo."
"I enjoy finding peace of mind through the process of writing. Whenever I begin to feel afflicted or uneasy, I pick up my pen and record these words in my own way, compiling them into book after book. I hope that in my fragmented words, future generations can feel the pulse of my soul. I want them to know how my story connects with the pain in their own lives, and in doing so, perhaps alleviate their physical suffering and inner restlessness.
Of course, all of this is done with the utmost sincerity from the heart. Because I have personally experienced such suffering, and because I found a way to walk out of it—to no longer let my heart be so tormented—I am able to share this. This is especially true because I had my teacher, Anne Sullivan, by my side throughout my life, accompanying me; it was only through her that I was able to emerge from that darkness so quickly. When I stopped clinging tightly to my own defects, I wanted to use that same strength to help many others who, like me, were once trapped by their own perceived limitations and unable to let go, so that they too might find relief from their suffering.
I suppose I could be considered a long-lived person, having reached the age of eighty-eight. For the society of that time, that age was considered quite advanced.
Yet, because I spent my life navigating through ups and downs, I worked very hard to make the most of my existence. I was constantly helping others, alleviating their pain, and in doing so, the pain in my own heart was gradually eased, bit by bit. Beyond the help of Teacher Sullivan, I also found that through one breakthrough after another, I slowly stopped viewing my own defects as a source of agony.
Now, looking back at it all from the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, I truly realise that I still have a very, very long way to go! Although I possessed a kind heart and a willingness to help others, the existence of my karma meant that I still had a sensitive and fragile heart. This heart was buried deep within me, not easily revealed to others, yet I always had people, events, and things that I clung to tightly. Even though there were moments of peace and joy in my heart, there were also many that would surface, and I was unable to let them go.
For the people who were most important in my life, I held on with a desperate grip. While we lived in peace and helped one another, I also generated immense emotional entanglements within those relationships. Especially when Teacher Sullivan, who was my lifelong friend and mentor, passed away, I was truly devastated. Having been so closely bonded with her for so long, when she left, it felt as though I had lost a major part of my soul. This was the nature of my inner attachments and my tendency to cling to things, all of which had been cultivated without my even realising it.
This is also why, in the final years of my life in the human world, my body began to fail. Because of my various thoughts and feelings, I stirred up many different beings—different batches of beings—who were awakened by my karma. This led to a mild stroke, which made my mobility very difficult. I always needed someone by my side to help me maintain a normal life. That was a massive test I faced physically after I turned eighty.
When I was eighty-eight, I passed away peacefully in my sleep. At the moment I left the human world, I did not know I had departed. I only knew that I suddenly felt lighter, and my movements seemed easier. At times, I even mistakenly thought that my health had simply improved, but I also vaguely sensed that I no longer belonged to that world.
Although it was still pitch black before me and I could hear nothing—that part was no different—I could no longer touch many things, nor could I feel the warmth of human affection. I spent the next few decades, perhaps nearly fifty years, alone in that even darker world. Life in the ghost realm is not happy at all; the mood is forever one of gloom and depression.
Looking back on my life, I am already very, very grateful.
If I look at my life from the perspective of one who now sees through the laws of karma and cause and effect, given the heavy karma I brought into the human world, the things I had to repay were not merely what I experienced. Fortunately, I always had true spiritual friends to guide me, and the support of my religious faith at the time, which allowed me to remain firm in living a life based on Goodness. No matter how turbulent or uneasy my heart felt, I could still face the world with strength and bring happiness and peace of mind to others.
Through my influence and the books I wrote, many people gained a sense of peace and were able to understand the importance of gratitude. In this way, I dissolved quite a bit of my spiritual obstacles. Although I did not know the Buddha's teachings at the time, nor did I know of the pure and perfect Goodness spoken of in the Dharma, I spent most of my life thinking of others and doing things for others. Under such circumstances, I still had the opportunity to dissolve karma. This is something I, as Helen Keller, am very grateful for in my life. It is also fortunate that after I died, when I was being pursued by beings seeking , I did not end up in a place of extreme suffering.
Of course, what I am most grateful for is the time I encountered the Buddha while in the ghost realm. This was due to the great compassion of Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su, which gave many of us beings in the three evil realms and the underworld the opportunity to leave suffering behind and see the light once again. This is not an easy thing to accomplish; it is only possible because Practitioner Su has attained Buddhahood in the human world, which has moved Namo Amituofo to reside at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Australia.
Many beings in the spirit realm are so grateful! We have all lived in a dark and painful world for too long. Too many beings are trapped within it, unable to find liberation, so naturally, there is a very strong yearning for light. Moreover, this is the light that comes from the Buddha—the light that allows one to truly obtain eternal liberation. Such a wonderful opportunity is something all of us beings are deeply grateful for!
I have seen many beings in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, whether they were famous people or unknown individuals; everyone has obtained deliverance through the opportunity of the Buddha coming to this world. Namo Amituofo is incredibly compassionate in establishing the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, and Practitioner Su is even more compassionate for remaining in the human world, even at the advanced age of eighty-three, to suffer on behalf of all beings so that we may enjoy these peaceful days.
Practitioner Su's body is truly made of iron! This is not something an ordinary person could endure. I have witnessed layers upon layers of beings and demon crowds attacking Practitioner Su's physical body with immense speed and power, yet Practitioner Su continues to bear it all with a joyful heart, as if feeling nothing at all. Looking at myself, if all of this were happening to me, I certainly could not do it! This is perhaps the difference between a Buddha and an ordinary person!
I deeply feel the Buddha's compassion, and I have made my vows. Now, as a practitioner of the Buddha's path, having spent these ten years in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, I have been purified a great deal. I deeply understand that the Buddha's compassion is something everyone should learn. The equality of the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss is something I admire so much! The Buddha's heart is so equal, which is why He is able to establish such an equal world. When everyone arrives here, not to mention that there are no defects or illnesses, there are also no discriminations. In appearance, Wisdom, virtue, and auspicious characteristics, everyone equally enjoys everything in the Buddha-land.
The supernatural powers the Buddha gives to beings—such as the Divine Foot, knowing past lives, the heavenly eye, and divine hearing—are all equally bestowed. Everyone can see their own past and present lives, and naturally, they can understand many truths. They also know that the human body one has in this life is actually false; it is all an illusion, merely a tool used to repay one's karma for this lifetime.
If you do well, you can go to a good place; if you do not do well, this body becomes a burden that will drag us to bad places to suffer and undergo retribution. The days I spent suffering in the ghost realm made me feel this point deeply. If your sins are not repaid, you still have to go to the ghost realm to continue suffering and repay those sins. How fortunate it is to be able to come to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss; it is an opportunity given to us by the Buddha's compassion!
I know there are still too many beings in the world whom I harmed in the past, still waiting bitterly in the space between realms. When I had a physical body, they wanted to come and seek revenge. I know their pain, and watching their suffering, I struggle deeply in my heart. I know that I am currently unable to return to the human world to save them, because I do not have the ability to go back, and even if I did, it would only result in us all being swallowed up together.
But I implore all the beings connected to me, Helen Keller: if you can hear these words, please come to understand the Buddhist education at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. Come and listen to Practitioner Su's lectures, and let us all put down the pain and grievances we carry within. Everyone can certainly have a better chance to obtain deliverance. Do not continue to wait for me in the space between realms, trapped in the painful days of 'karmic retribution.' It is not that I do not want to repay this karma, but I know deeply that if our mutual torment and pain continue like this, it will only bring more suffering to everyone.
I hope to share the Buddha's education with you so that you can feel the Buddha's compassion, and then I, too, can finally let go!
You may still be unfamiliar with the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. But I want to tell you all: you must believe everything I am saying right now. The beauty of the West can only be truly felt once you have learned this phrase, 'Namo Amituofo,' and are willing to take up this Buddha-name. You will then gradually be able to feel the Buddha's compassion. This is because the Holy Name 'Namo Amituofo' itself contains all the power to give everyone peace of mind; all of the Buddha's majestic power and merit are contained within it.
If you can follow me in chanting this Buddha-name, you will slowly bring yourself into the Buddha's gate, and you may even have the opportunity to follow the Buddha's light to be reborn in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. There, you will see the light again and understand all the Causal Conditions of your many lives. You can also take this opportunity to obtain deliverance for yourself and help more beings who are connected to you to obtain deliverance as well.
The hatred you currently hold for me actually proves that you, too, have many beings waiting for you in the space between realms, and they are also suffering greatly. If you can stand up, you can even help them! Namo Amituofo."
Although I have not yet realised my true nature and attained Buddhahood, and I cannot offer you any substantial, physical help directly, perhaps my sharing today will touch your hearts. If you can just find it in yourselves to start chanting 'Namo Amituofo' and seek Spiritual Deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, you too can obtain the same deliverance that I have received. And just like me, you will then be empowered to help the sentient beings with whom you have karmic affinity! Think about it—this is a path open to all of us.
This is such a beautiful, wonderful thing, and I truly hope you believe me when I say this. It is the most precious opportunity you will ever encounter.
Finally, as a humble disciple of the Buddha, I, Helen Keller, wish to express my deepest, most sincere gratitude once more to Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su for their boundless compassion and deliverance. I do not yet know how I can ever fully repay this immense debt of kindness, but I can commit myself to chanting the six-character name of 'Namo Amituofo' with all my heart. I will strive to cultivate a heart of compassion just like the Buddha’s, and work hard to embody the spirit of the Buddha, so that I may repay all the sentient beings with whom I share a karmic connection. This is my promise to you all.
Thank you all from the bottom of my heart! Namo Amituofo.
