In the journey of spiritual practice, the ability to engage in honest self-reflection is the most vital tool you possess. It allows you to discern whether you are moving forward or slipping backward. Many practitioners often wonder how to measure their progress, yet the answer lies within the sincerity of your own heart. To advance is to be fiercely diligent, maintaining a steady momentum toward the goal of . To retreat, however, is to allow your practice to stagnate or to move in the opposite direction, away from the light of the True Teachings.
If your practice is inconsistent—advancing one day and retreating the next—how can you expect to achieve spiritual success? You must ask yourself this question with deep sincerity. The path to liberation requires a consistent, unwavering commitment. When you allow your focus to waver, you lose the precious momentum needed to break through the barriers of your own .
Consider the gravity of your situation across the span of many lifetimes. If you are diligent in this life, yet you fail to reach the state of Awakening before your life ends, what will become of you? In your next life, will you be fortunate enough to hear the Buddha’s teachings again? Even if you encounter the , will you be able to distinguish the True Teachings from the many misleading paths that exist in this world? Even if you are fortunate enough to hear the True Teachings, will you have the strength and the resolve to be fiercely diligent once more?
If you have encountered the Dharma Gate, you must seize this opportunity. Can you ensure that in this life, you will move forward without retreat, or at the very least, ensure that any retreat is followed by a greater advancement? Your ultimate goal is to achieve rebirth in the Western Pure Land or to realise your true nature and attain Buddhahood. This is not merely for your own liberation, but to fulfil the vow of saving all beings.
The work of saving beings is endless, for there are infinite suffering beings waiting for rescue. Because this mission has no end, you will find that your work continues across time and space. Whether you are in this world or another, you will go wherever your karmic affinity leads you. You may appear in different roles and take on different forms, but regardless of where you are, your purpose remains the same: to help all beings leave suffering behind and find happiness through rebirth in the Western Pure Land.
If your heart and character are not yet settled, you will inevitably be influenced by your karma and the external environment. This leads to the fluctuating states of advancing and retreating. To understand your current state, you must look closely at the signs within your own Body-Mind-Spirit.
How can you tell if you are experiencing a retreat in your practice? One of the most common signs is the presence of persistent . When this state enters your space and remains there for a long time without improvement, it is a clear indication that your energy is not being channelled into the right path. Furthermore, if your personal ego, habits, and selfishness remain unchanged despite your efforts, you are likely stuck in a cycle of retreat.
When you are overly attached to the "self"—when you insist on your own opinions and personal preferences—you will find it difficult to advance. You become limited by these attachments, and your Wisdom (Prajna) cannot manifest. This is a state where you are trapped by your own ego, making it nearly impossible to move forward on the path to Buddhahood.
How, then, can you know that you are truly advancing? You will know it when you have a genuine vow to save yourself and all other beings. This is marked by your ability to let go of the "self," to sacrifice your own comfort, and to act selflessly for the benefit of others. Even if you encounter moments of retreat, you do not shrink back. Instead, you actively work to improve, ensuring that your overall trajectory remains one of progress.
True advancement is also seen in the following ways:
As you continue to practise, you will find that your virtues—compassion, Wisdom (Prajna), mind-capacity, and tolerance—are being nurtured. This growth is visible in every move you make, in your daily life, and in how you conduct yourself in the world. As your purity manifests, you will receive the Buddha's . You will find that your mind-capacity opens, you are able to hear the Buddha’s words, and you can receive messages that aid in your spiritual work. Ultimately, your appearance will reflect this inner transformation, becoming one of compassion and dignity.
