On the twenty-first of March, 2025, during the first session of the , Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju provided these profound teachings on what it means to be truly clear in the heart.
To be clear in the heart means to possess a state of mind that is perfectly lucid and transparent. It is a state where one has achieved a deep, intuitive understanding of all phenomena and the underlying principles that govern our existence. Who is it that truly possesses this clarity? It is the practitioner who has attained purity in their daily practice, and it is the one who has realised their true nature. When one reaches this level of spiritual maturity, the fog of confusion lifts, and the reality of the universe becomes as clear as a reflection in a still, undisturbed pool of water.
What exactly is it that such a person is clear about? They are clear about the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. They understand the fundamental facts of existence. Because they possess this deep insight, they do not dare to violate these sacred principles. They live their lives in total harmony with the path, and as a result, their practice flourishes and bears fruit. They are also clear about the laws of and cause and effect. Because they see the inevitable consequences of every action, they are filled with a healthy sense of caution. They do not dare to create negative causes, for they know that to do so would only lead to the suffering of .
Furthermore, those who are clear in the heart understand the suffering that all beings endure. They are acutely aware of the cycle of birth, aging, sickness, and death, and they understand the impermanence that defines our world. Because they see the causes behind the karma that beings create, they are able to guide others, helping them to avoid creating further negative karma and encouraging them to engage in sincere repenting. They can even perceive the cells of the body and the spirits that reside within. They are clear about the specific locations of these beings and the areas where illness has manifested. By helping these spirits resolve their conflicts with , by inviting them to listen to the , and by performing , they can alleviate the suffering of these beings. This process not only slows the progression of illness but also helps to heal the profound damage inflicted upon the Body-Mind-Spirit.
Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju also spoke of the current state of our practice. He is clear about why, in this modern era, so many people chant Namo Amituofo, yet so few successfully achieve rebirth in the Western Pure Land. He understands the obstacles that practitioners face and is able to provide the necessary guidance to help them overcome these hurdles. Through his lectures and teachings, he dissects the current situation, identifies the root problems, and offers clear, actionable solutions. However, it is vital to understand that while the Buddha’s power can provide immense support, the actual resolution of these problems requires your own personal effort. You must be the one to act. If you are truly willing to change your personality traits, to change your ways, and to practise with diligence to break through your limitations, then your practice will undoubtedly show progress. You will find the path to liberation, and you will fulfil your aspiration to return to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
