Making Good Use of Buddha's Power
The Life and Journey of Lay Practitioner Nan Huaijin
Throughout countless lifetimes in the cycle of rebirth, our spirits have been continuously clouded by layers of pollution. This accumulation of dust and filth has obscured the brilliance of our original nature. Now, through the diligent practice of purification, we begin to gradually remove these accumulated stains. As the filth is cleared away, our true self is revealed, and we move closer to the moment of . Therefore, elevating the quality of your spirit is the vital prerequisite for Awakening and the very foundation of your practice. This is the primary direction of cultivation here at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre, the place where truly abides in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia.
To elevate the quality of your spirit, you must commit yourself to a life of consistent and sincere practice. This involves several essential pillars of daily cultivation:
Beyond personal cultivation, you must also engage in the work of the to further elevate your spiritual quality. This includes:
When your Six Roots are purified and your heart is filled with goodness, you begin to open up space within your own being. In this state of clarity, you become capable of receiving the direct teachings of Namo Amituofo and the guidance of Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju. You may even find yourself able to communicate with beings from different realms. When you truly understand that the human body is the most sophisticated technology in the universe, you can use it to its fullest potential to elevate your spiritual quality.
Your heart must remain undisturbed by the various emotions and desires that the physical body experiences. You must not allow these to cause ripples in your mind, for any emotional volatility or fluctuation causes profound harm to your spirit. Your spirit requires only purity and goodness, for the true self is inherently still. It is this pure, good, and unmoving heart that resonates with your true nature, allowing you to finally see it. Therefore, whenever you allow your mind to fluctuate, you are damaging your spirit and moving away from the path of elevation. When the mind is agitated, it is like layers of thick dust covering a mirror, preventing the light of Wisdom from shining through. This is precisely why the teachings emphasize the need to diligently practise the Precepts (Discipline), Concentration and Wisdom to extinguish greed, anger, and ignorance. Only by holding firmly to the Precepts can you achieve the state of concentration where you are no longer stirred by the external world. This protects your spirit and allows Wisdom to manifest in the midst of purity and goodness.
The Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss is the pure Buddha-land where one attains Buddhahood. In that realm, everything one needs or desires is fulfilled, and thus, there is no cause for the mind to wander or be stirred by desire. The beings of the Western Land dwell in a state of perfect stillness, where their spiritual quality is continuously purified and elevated. When the spirit is finally free of even the slightest trace of pollution—when it is perfectly pure and perfectly good—one sees their true nature. Entering this state of ultimate purity and goodness is the moment of becoming a Buddha, a state of infinite, radiant light.
