The Life and Journey of Lay Practitioner Nan Huaijin
The path of practice is a profound journey of transformation. It is the process of moving from the world of the and into the pure, unblemished state of the transcendent realm. This is a journey of diligent practice, aimed at removing defilements and attaining purity, achieving , and ultimately realising one's true nature to attain Buddhahood. As we walk this path, we must understand that our progress is measured by our ability to transcend the limitations of our ego and our worldly habits.
During this journey, one must inevitably face what we call demonic tests. These tests do not appear randomly; they manifest precisely where our personal habits and ego are the most entrenched. The demonic forces will present various situations to test whether a practitioner can remain unmoved by desire. To succeed, one must hold firmly to the , maintain meditative concentration, and face these challenges with the dual power of and wisdom.
Demonic forces are cunning and can manifest in many different roles to challenge your resolve. They may appear through:
These tests are designed to challenge your faith in the Buddha and in yourself. They examine whether your vow to chant and attain Buddhahood is truly firm. They test whether you possess the perseverance and the strength of will to remain true to your original intention of Awakening.
These tests often manifest within the very fabric of our existence, specifically targeting the Five Desires, the : Greed, Anger, Ignorance, Arrogance, and Doubt, and the Five Aggregates. This includes the physical suffering of ageing and illness, as well as the various thoughts and emotions that arise from our . If we are not careful, these can lead to inappropriate behaviour or the creation of further negative . These tests often appear in people, objects, or environments that are perfectly aligned with our personal weaknesses, specifically designed to confuse and tempt the heart of the practitioner.
If you succumb to these temptations, fail to uphold the Precepts, or lack sufficient meditative concentration and wisdom, you will find yourself trapped in the Five Poisons and Five Desires. In such a state, your practice will stagnate or even regress, and you may inadvertently create the causes for suffering. However, if you can strictly observe the Precepts and use the power of meditative concentration and wisdom, you can subdue these demonic influences. By doing so, you can break free from the Five Poisons: Greed, Anger, Ignorance, Arrogance, and Doubt, and overcome the temptations of wealth, lust, fame, food, and sleep. You will conquer the habit of excessive and enter into a higher state of awareness, purifying your body, mind, and spirit through diligent daily practice.
By listening to the sutras and hearing the , you learn to be obedient to the Truth. You learn to recognise your faults and correct them, no longer insisting on your own narrow views. When you reach this state, you will be fearless of any demonic test. You will obtain the subtle and wonderful Dharma, and you will attain the highest, most correct Awakening. This is the path for all students of Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre to realise their true nature and attain Buddhahood. Namo Amituofo.
