Yuen Man-ying:
. Today, I am very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to be interviewed by the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. I cherish this opportunity deeply because I have now attained a brand-new life. I want to tell the whole world about this, especially our fellow Hong Kong people. I am a native of Hong Kong, and my personality might be a bit different from the average Hong Kong person; I am more forthright, free-spirited, and cheerful, without the repressed and reserved nature of the urbanites you see on the streets. Perhaps that is why I went into the travel industry.
When I was young, I often thought about what kind of career would truly suit me. Later, I chose the travel industry and started as a tour guide. This is because I could not live a nine-to-five life; the busyness of office buildings in the financial sector did not suit me. Although being a tour guide is not easy, and there were many very difficult and tormenting times, I felt that it was more stimulating and better suited my active, outdoor-loving personality. This was something I longed for throughout my life, so I once regarded it as my lifelong career and never changed that.
I am not a celebrity in everyone's eyes, just someone who is considered well-known in my industry in this region. But compared to the vast number of celebrities and corporate leaders that Practitioner Su is currently interviewing, I am truly a very small member. So small that not many people know me, and not many people know my name; even most people in Hong Kong do not know my name, which is normal. I am not a big star, nor am I someone with great influence; I am just a boss in the travel industry. Being able to be interviewed today, I am already very grateful!
We who have been led to the Western Land of Nature are now all very humble and modest. In the past, everyone was a person who acted superior, perhaps still harbouring a bit of an arrogant air in their hearts, and many habits could not be changed. But in the Western Land of Dharma Nature, we are all on our lotus seats, and apart from chanting the Buddha's name, making prostrations, and purifying ourselves, there is really nothing else we want to do. Of course, this heart is also constantly settled in the Buddha-name of Namo Amituofo, which is vastly different from the me who had a physical body before. Not only me, but many people are like this.
There is much to say about my life. But now that I am in the Western Land of Dharma Nature, let me first introduce this place to everyone. This is a Buddha-land, and it is a place unlike anything I had ever imagined. I was once a Christian and thought I would go to heaven, but I did not expect that after I died, I would end up in hell. In Christianity, the distinction between heaven and hell still exists, but why did I end up in hell instead of heaven? These are questions I had never seriously explored before. In hell, I just kept complaining, much like most people in hell, feeling that it was very, very bitter.
After arriving in the Western Land of Dharma Nature, I studied diligently, following Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su in active practice. Only then did I realise that the created in one's life is immense, and even the karma created throughout many lives is immense. My descent into hell in this life was to repay my . It is simply because sentient beings found me; this is the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way, and there is nothing more to say about it.
As a tour guide, and later as the founder of a travel company, it was impossible to follow the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way in such an industry. This is because what we operated was meant to provide people with enjoyment in terms of sight, sound, taste, and other aspects. After I died, I entered the Intestine-Digging Hell to suffer retribution, also because in the process of running this business, many of my thoughts and intentions were not entirely pure and good; the mixture of good and evil within them is what caused me to descend into hell. Furthermore, I also know that running a travel business actually indirectly created heavy killing karma. This is why I still had to go to hell to suffer retribution.
Perhaps in the eyes of others, I was kind—a good boss, husband, father, colleague, and friend. But in the human world, almost everyone is a good person, yet everyone still ends up in hell. It is evident that the standard for measuring good and evil in hell is vastly different from the standard recognised in the human world. Now that I have come to this Buddha-land, the Western Land of Dharma Nature, I have reflected deeply and told myself that since I have such a good opportunity to turn my life around, I must seize it, and I must tell everyone everything I have learned without any reservation. Do not talk about face or etiquette anymore; these are of no use. The most important thing is whether this heart knows how to repent in the present moment, and whether it knows that it should share its story so that everyone can use it as a good mirror.
I used to love to play and enjoyed tasting every new thing. But after coming here to listen to the sutras and hear the Dharma, I realised that true happiness does not lie in how much physical pleasure or stimulation I attained, but in whether my heart can achieve true "unmoved" meditative concentration and peace; no matter what others say or do, whether I can maintain the concentration and wisdom in my heart—this is the happiness I have learned in the Western Land of Dharma Nature.
It turns out that true happiness comes from within, not from seeking outwards. How could I have understood these truths before? Like secular people, I wanted to pursue more and more, better and better, hoping that our industry could also have such vigorous development; this is the common aspiration we all shared. When I was running this travel business, I always held this thought: I hoped that everything I obtained, my customers would definitely need even more. They sought out our tour groups to gain more satisfaction and stimulation. I hoped that through travel, they could broaden their horizons and enjoy more beautiful things. Therefore, we worked hard all our lives just to help them achieve what they sought in their hearts. Every travel plan was meticulously crafted; it looked ordinary, but we worked day and night for it, hoping to serve everyone at the lowest price.
In the Buddha’s teachings, it is emphasised that one must gather and mind to achieve single-mindedness in order to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. I know this is not an easy task; in the past, I was often in a state of high spirits or fluctuating moods. Everything followed the ups and downs of my work, the gains and losses, and various arose in my heart because of this. People in the world are, of course, happy when they gain and sad when they lose; this is a matter of course.
Looking at this life, the education of the Buddha’s teachings has truly overturned my way of thinking. After being purified by the Buddha-light in the Western Land of Dharma Nature, my entire Body-Mind-Spirit has become much more settled, as if there is nothing left that requires me to think, worry, or feel too much. It turns out that all the feelings I once had in the human world—whether in my career, family, interpersonal relationships, or emotions—have long since ceased to exist, leaving not a trace.
I will not let any thought or intention arise too much for anything, nor will I be swayed by any scene I see in the Western Land of Dharma Nature. The Western Land of Dharma Nature is such a beautiful world! But everyone is also practising very diligently by chanting the Buddha's name, making prostrations, and bowing to the Buddha, because we all know that this place is not yet the ultimate perfection. Only by reaching the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss can everyone truly say they have attained eternal life and no longer have to suffer the pain of the six realms of rebirth.
Therefore, we are all practising very diligently here, appearing even more active than the fourfold assembly at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. Because the human realm has this body, it inherently has many obstacles, and this body will always tell you many wrong messages. These messages do not come from one's own true self, but from the sentient beings and demon crowds outside and inside who participate in it, telling this body what to do, what to think, and how to act.
Therefore, most people cannot be the masters of themselves; this body always traps our soul, preventing it from being expressed. Only the soul of an awakened being is truly bright and can truly master this body, just like Practitioner Su today.
Practitioner Su—I haven't properly explained this person to everyone yet! Oh, I am very sorry; saying it like that is truly disrespectful to Practitioner Su. Practitioner Su is a Buddha, and I should respect Practitioner Su properly.
Yes, I am very grateful to Practitioner Su, and very grateful to Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su for saving us sentient beings. Practitioner Su saved me and also saved many, many sentient beings to come to the Western Land of Dharma Nature. The reason I say Practitioner Su is different from others is that thirty years ago, Practitioner Su realised their true nature and attained Buddhahood with a human body. Such a body is inherently different from that of an outsider, because Practitioner Su's spirit has complete autonomy over the body, and this spirit can also freely travel back and forth to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, and can also travel throughout all places in the ten directions. This is a very special thing, but it is also the truth. Therefore, among the people I have admired in my life, there is truly no one like Practitioner Su who can make me prostrate myself as if I were treating a Buddha or .
In the human world, only Practitioner Su can overcome the myriad difficulties of this body to reach the current state. And how difficult are these myriad difficulties? Everything is still decided by this heart. If this heart is willing to believe that it is a Buddha, believe that it can become a Buddha, completely let go of all feelings of the body, mind, and world, and only chant "Namo Amituofo" to the end, it is possible to reach the state of Practitioner Su.
Practitioner Su always reminds the fourfold assembly in this way, hoping that everyone can have a moment of clarity so that more people can be saved together; this is the wish of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas. From the Western Land of Dharma Nature, we can see that the fourfold assembly in the temple are actually all being controlled by different sentient beings. Although they are already much clearer than those outside the temple, they are still too far away from being able to reach the clarity of Practitioner Su. They have their own feelings, selfishness, various things they want to do, or futures they want to pursue, people they like or dislike, and many feelings of the body; these are all obstructing the development of their Body-Mind-Spirit and cutting off their possibility of realising their true nature. We see this very clearly and know that this is the truth of the human world. But fortunately, they have such a good teacher—Namo Amituofo, Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju, and Practitioner Su—they are all in the temple. Moreover, Practitioner Su has a human body here and can do the work of teaching and guiding everyone, helping everyone turn from confusion to .
This process is very arduous, because everyone has used this body for decades and is accustomed to all its sensations and habits, making it difficult to return to zero from the heart, and difficult to reach the point where everything has nothing to do with oneself, and only becoming a Buddha and realising one's true nature is the ultimate goal. It is not easy to cultivate such a mindset, but the most important thing is to have a compassionate heart. Only by truly seeing the suffering of the people in the world can one know that one is actually also suffering in the midst of it. Everyone is in the cycle of rebirth; who is not suffering? Everyone is suffering; it is just a matter of knowing the suffering or not knowing it.
If one practises in the Buddha-land, Practitioner Su often reminds everyone of the suffering in the human world and tells everyone what the state of attaining Buddhahood is like. Everyone should be able to understand, right? I see it very clearly here and I yearn for it very much, because I know that the state of one who has attained Buddhahood and the state of ordinary people are truly too far apart.
I once loved everything in life, having a good wife who shared my joys and sorrows, and a good daughter; we got along very harmoniously and happily. It was the same with my employees; everyone spent a lifetime with me, and there were no confrontations. I thought this was a fulfilling life, but I did not expect that I would have to suffer the torment of illness in my later years.
Eight years of cancer made me gradually see the suffering of the human world clearly. Although everything was beautiful, when this body failed, everything said was fake; the body itself is also fake and will eventually have a day of decay. The joys, sorrows, partings, reunions, love, and hatred of the human world are being staged at any time. I was the same; my life was considered smooth sailing, living a vibrant and good life, but I was still the same as ordinary people—I had to get sick, grow old, and die; no one can escape any of this.
Watching the interviews of many celebrities and corporate leaders from mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, Australia, and other places here, everything is clear and understandable. It turns out that even though everyone lives such a wealthy life—these celebrities, in terms of the human realm, have lived better lives than the vast majority of people, not worrying about food, clothing, or any enjoyment in life—they still have to die in pain, and most of them have to go to hell to suffer retribution. How could such a life be something to yearn for?
After I saw all of this clearly, I also reflected painfully in the Western Land of Dharma Nature, telling myself that everything in the past was truly illusory. Only by tightly following the footsteps of Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su can one truly find the day of rebirth. Of course, for those of us in the Western Land of Dharma Nature, it is relatively simple to hold tightly to this Buddha-name, as we do not have bodies and will not engage in further scattered thoughts. However, people in the human world are different; their bodies are far more complex. I no longer have the obstruction of a body, which is equivalent to not having the interference of many sentient beings. Whatever I want to see, I can see more clearly and distinctly. But unlike everyone else, I no longer have this body and cannot follow Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre to practise in such a way. I truly no longer have this opportunity, and I dare not think too much about it. Because being able to come here is already very difficult, and it is something I am very grateful for. The mental notes of every sentient being within a human body are different, and their relationship with the of that body is also not the same. The relationships within this karma can be said to be varied; they are not just the four types of debt collection, debt repayment, repaying kindness, or repaying grievances that people know of. There are too many indescribable entanglements involved. The reason why people in the human world suffer is that their emotions are very complex, and when this heart cannot receive true Buddhist education, they are actually not in control of themselves. How would I know the truth of these facts? Apart from the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Australia, I think there is no other temple in the world that can tell me what the truth is. Everyone is accustomed to all the sensations of this body and places them in their hearts, causing themselves suffering. Sensations are only things you hold onto tightly. In the moment you can let them go, you should understand, right? When you are feeling down, the moment you let go is so beautiful. This is because it was never yours to begin with; letting go just means returning to your original state, which is a kind of true coolness and ease. I am also learning this in the Western Land of Dharma Nature. Although I am a spirit and can learn very quickly and well, I do not have this body to perform, to repay debts, or to practise like people in the human world. This is something that cannot be helped. Who told me not to have encountered true Buddhist education before? Now that I have truly encountered them, if life could be lived over again, I would definitely choose to live a more plain and simple life, no longer engaging in things like travelling, excitement, and so on. In the past, I could be considered a prominent figure in my industry. In my lifetime, I probably led groups from Hong Kong to Japan over a thousand times. I went back and forth, treating Japan as my second home, and I saw the landscapes, customs, and social cultures of many countries. Regarding humanity, I also saw the different temperaments and cultures of different people. I know that 'people are harmonious but different'; people from all countries may have the same pure nature, but because of the environment and acquired factors, everyone has different temperaments and preferences. I saw these bits and pieces in my eyes, and I am very clear about them. Because I truly believe what Practitioner Su said, that everyone is born kind and pure, and it is only because of too many different habits and learning experiences acquired later in life that people become different. Therefore, I have learned to be more compassionate now. After seeing all of this and combining it with the education of Buddha’s teachings, I know that in conducting oneself in the world, one must firmly uphold the kind nature in one's heart and uphold this heart of 'thinking for others, not for oneself'. This is a very important part of Buddha’s teachings. Practitioner Su always teaches everyone not to be selfish and to think for others. Although this has been heard countless times in the human world, there are indeed not many people who can do it. The value of Buddhist education lies in the fact that it tells everyone that everyone is originally a Buddha, and everyone can attain Buddhahood. Against this background, everyone is originally equal and equally good. When there are no discriminations from the inside out, people can soberly know how important it is to find their original face. The various differences today are actually just the karma created by different reincarnation experiences, leading to different results. Now my spirit is much clearer than before. Everything I pursued in the past, I no longer feel is so valuable and beautiful, because under the concept that everyone is equal, I suddenly realised that people cannot have a 'self'. With the word 'self', that is the source of all suffering. What I am thinking about now is how to hold this Buddha-name well, how to help sentient beings with karmic affinity, or how to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss sooner. I think these are the most important things in a spiritual life. Without all this, even if you have gained a lot, it is all illusory and not real. I worked in the travel industry for a lifetime, gained a lot, but also lost a lot. Most importantly, I lost my health in my later years, and I also lost the opportunity for spiritual growth. It is not easy to come to the human world once, but because I did not learn true Buddhist education, I walked through this life in such a hurry, without the opportunity to truly settle myself, to let my spirit grow, and to have different experiences. So I am exactly the same as secular people. Now, because of the great
