Resolving Karmic Debts: A Testimony from the Western Pure Land

Lay Practitioner Li Muyuan has arrived to share his story. I am Li Muyuan, now residing in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. In my previous life, I served as the head of the Singapore Buddhist Lodge. Eventually, I was consumed by illness and passed away. Following my death, I was fortunate enough to be rescued from the hells by Practitioner Su, who guided me to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. This is not a particularly glorious chapter of my history, yet it is a profoundly fortunate one. It is only because I was connected to Practitioner Su, and because of his magnificent skills, that I am able to exist here in the Western Land today.

The Grace of Rescue

In truth, without the boundless compassion of Namo Amituofo and the intervention of Practitioner Su, the Li Muyuan who resides in the Western Land would not exist. Now, I have once again received the grace of Practitioner Su, allowing me to join him in the work of performing Chao Du for my karmic creditors from my past life. This is no simple task; it is an inconceivable undertaking, yet Practitioner Su has made it possible.

For those of us who have been saved and brought to the Western Land by Practitioner Su, we no longer need to descend into the human world to be reborn. We are able to perform Chao Du for our karmic creditors from here, ensuring that we are not later sought out by them, which would prevent us from returning to the Western Land. This is the profound compassion of Practitioner Su. He understands our hearts, and for this, I am truly and deeply grateful.

A Precious Opportunity for Spiritual Growth

As a spirit without a physical body, one can lead a clear, free, and magnificent life in the Western Land. However, one cannot easily perform Chao Du for the sentient beings with karmic affinity or the karmic creditors who are still trapped within the cycle of rebirth or wandering through the various spaces of the spiritual realms. Now that I have this precious opportunity, I cherish it immensely. This is an experience I have never had before, and I did not know what to expect. Therefore, while it was still dark in the early hours of the morning in the human world, I followed everyone to the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, waiting for Practitioner Su to lead us on this journey.

At that moment, the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre was bathed in a brilliant golden light. This golden light was boundless, appearing even brighter and more dazzling than the light of day. Although the Western Land itself is naturally filled with such scenes, the fact that this manifestation could be seen even in the human world truly left me astonished and filled with admiration. It is a great pity that the physical eyes of ordinary people cannot perceive it. The space occupied by the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, as seen from the spiritual realms, is not one visible to the physical eyes of humans, unless one has opened their spiritual vision and possesses the necessary karmic affinity.

We sincerely hope that there will be a person of great fortune in the human world who will resolve to build and support this temple, allowing the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre to manifest fully in this world. The merit of such an act would be immeasurable.

Facing the Past

I looked upon the sentient beings within my own space, and they were everywhere. They pointed at me, calling me a coward for hiding away. They claimed they could not find me, but now they were here to settle the accounts. They made gestures as if to strike me, but suddenly, a powerful force blocked them. It was undoubtedly the Dharma protectors who saved me. Some of these beings opened their eyes wide, angrily recounting the unfair treatment they had suffered at my hands. There were also female friends from my past who wept and accused me of my heartlessness and various other faults.

Faced with these entirely unfamiliar aspects of my past, I could only accept them completely. I knew that I had committed too many wrongs and had created countless karmic creditors. I sincerely repented and apologised to them. Furthermore, the animals I had consumed in my past life—chickens, ducks, pigs, fish, and shrimp—also appeared, staring at me with wide eyes and demanding, "Return my life to me!" Their appearance, so real and face-to-face, shocked me. In an instant, I felt the suffering of these beings and the weight of the sins I had created. I could not help but feel a deep sorrow, and hot tears streamed down my face.

The Healing Power of Namo Amituofo

I am grateful for the compassion of the Buddha, who always provides the comfort we need at the most appropriate time. The Buddha-light surrounding us and the continuous chanting of the Buddha-name smoothed away the anger and the twisted expressions on the faces of the spirits. Some were moved to tears; others were astonished to see their animal forms—the shells of the creatures they had been—fall away, returning to their original human appearances. Some simply calmed down, no longer roaring in rage.

A voice echoed through the air: "Children, chant Namo Amituofo! Follow the golden light to Namo Amituofo!" The kind and gentle voice softened everyone's heart. One of them began to chant, and soon I heard everyone following along, chanting the Buddha-name as they moved toward the golden light ahead. Witnessing these scenes, I felt an endless sense of gratitude in my heart. Only the compassionate power and the great merit of Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su can resolve the resentment and hatred within the hearts of our karmic creditors.
