Guardians of the Sacred

The Dragon and Heaven Dharma Protectors are beings who have heard the Buddha’s teachings and have been deeply transformed by the power of the Dharma. Through this profound influence, they have dedicated themselves to becoming guardians of the Buddha’s teachings. For those who are sincere practitioners of the True Teachings, those who maintain an Upright Heart and Right Mind while chanting Namo Amituofo, and those who are diligent in their practice, these protectors offer their constant support. They stand guard to prevent interference from external spirits, allowing the practitioner to focus on their spiritual work in a peaceful and undisturbed environment. It is our sincere hope that you will soon achieve success in your diligent practice, so that you may in turn teach and transform other beings, fulfilling the noble mission of helping them leave suffering behind and find true happiness.

The Ascending Path of Celestial Guardians

The Dragon and Heaven Dharma Protectors do not merely guard others; they are also on their own path of spiritual growth. As they protect practitioners and those who chant the name of Namo Amituofo, they are simultaneously accumulating merit and virtue. By listening to the sutras and hearing the Dharma, they continuously elevate the quality of their own spirits. They, too, make vows to chant Namo Amituofo and seek rebirth in the of Ultimate Bliss. When their good roots, , and Causal Conditions are fully matured, they naturally attain the opportunity to be reborn in the Western Pure Land.

The Celestial Assembly of the Infinite Life

In the Infinite Life Sutra, specifically in the chapter regarding the benefits of hearing the sutra, it is mentioned that the eight classes of celestial and dragon beings, along with the entire assembly, were filled with great upon hearing the Buddha’s words, and they accepted and practised them with faith. This indicates that these beings were present as listeners when the World-Honoured One delivered this sutra. These eight classes of beings, known as the Dragon and Heaven Dharma Protectors, include:

  • The Celestial Beings
  • The Dragon Beings
  • The Yakshas
  • The Gandharvas
  • The Asuras
  • The Garudas
  • The Kinnaras
  • The Mahoragas

Where Namo Amituofo Resides

At the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Goombungee, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, Namo Amituofo truly abides. Because this is a place where the Buddha resides, the Dragon and Heaven Dharma Protectors gather in great numbers. Among them, Sangharama and Skanda Bodhisattva are always present to oversee the sanctity of the environment. While the fourfold assembly of disciples is fortunate to be under the protection of these guardians, there are specific conditions under which this protection cannot be extended.

The Inner Threshold of

If a practitioner is disturbed by their own , attached spirits, or demonic crowds residing within their own body, and as a result falls into a state of or enters a state of spiritual wandering, the Dragon and Heaven Dharma Protectors cannot intervene. This is because such states are directly related to the interaction between the practitioner and their own karmic creditors. If a spirit is drawn into these states by following the influence of karmic creditors, the Dharma protectors cannot interfere with this karmic process. Similarly, if the thoughts and intentions of the fourfold assembly of disciples are not virtuous, they create negative karma. This negative state resonates with external attached spirits or demonic crowds, drawing them into and causing the practitioner to fall into drowsiness or lose control of their own mind. In such instances, the Dragon and Heaven Dharma Protectors are unable to intervene, as the cause originates from within the practitioner’s own mind.

The Vigilance of the Dharma Protectors

However, if a practitioner is diligently following the teachings and is subjected to unprovoked interference from external beings or demonic forces, the Dragon and Heaven Dharma Protectors will immediately step in to protect them. They will drive away these interfering beings to ensure they do not come near or disturb the practitioner. Their role is to assist the practitioner in maintaining peace of mind so that they may continue their practice or spiritual work without hindrance. Therefore, always strive to maintain an Upright Heart and Right Mind, and let your practice be a beacon of purity.
