Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju:
The Eternal Pillars of Existence
The Universal Principles, Truth, and the Right Path refer to the standards and fundamental laws that govern the operation of the entire universe, the ultimate reality of existence, and the correct, upright, and unswerving way that leads one toward liberation.
To the fourfold assembly of the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre, these concepts are not unfamiliar. Through the constant guidance and reminders from Namo Amituofo, Practitioner Su, and myself, you have heard these terms many times. However, I must ask you: do you truly know them, and more importantly, do you abide by them in your daily life?
Acting for the benefit of all beings is goodness, while acting for the sake of one's own selfish desires is evil. For any practitioner, this is the great principle and the primary direction of your spiritual life.
The Path to Liberation and the Roots of Suffering
Why is it that through practice, one can leave suffering behind and find happiness, or even transcend the cycle of rebirth? It is because one has learned to abide by the standards and principles of the universe—which is to say, one has learned to uphold the . By understanding the truth, one ceases to create evil, and by walking the right path, one remains upright and unswerving.
Conversely, why do so many beings remain trapped in the six realms of rebirth, suffering through the pains of birth, aging, sickness, and death? It is because they do not understand these truths and, consequently, they violate the Universal Principles, Truth, and the Right Path. Therefore, when you are engaged in your practice, do not take the teachings of Namo Amituofo, Practitioner Su, or myself lightly. When we repeat these instructions, it is because they are vital to your success and are the very areas where you are most likely to make mistakes or become negligent.
The Foundations of a Life of
What exactly constitutes the Universal Principles, Truth, and the Right Path? In short, they are the foundations of a life of awakening:
- The Law of Cause and Effect: Understanding that every action has a consequence and that good and evil deeds will inevitably bear fruit.
- Ethics and Morality: Upholding the virtues of filial piety and respect for one's elders and teachers.
- The Five Precepts and the Ten Virtues: Practising the Five Precepts and the Ten Virtues, and cultivating Precepts (Discipline), Concentration and Wisdom.
- Temple Discipline: Adhering to the rules and precepts of the Buddha’s gate, taking the precepts as the very foundation of your conduct.
- and Wisdom: Cultivating a heart of compassion and wisdom, and practising joyful letting go.
- The Six Paramitas: Engaging in Generosity (Giving), Discipline (Precepts), Patience (Endurance), Diligent Practice, Meditation (Concentration), and Wisdom (Prajna).
- The True Self: Recognising the original nature that is inherent in all beings. Through diligent practice, you will eventually see your true nature.
