Spiritual Life is Endless, Karmic Retribution is Certain
is the fundamental spirit of our practice. When we witness the immense suffering of beings, our hearts naturally yearn for them to be free from pain. This is the essence of the path we walk.
In the study of the Buddha’s teachings, we distinguish between different approaches to practice. The focuses primarily on personal liberation, seeking to escape the cycle of suffering for oneself. However, the path is dedicated to the salvation of all beings. In this path, we recognise that we are not separate from the beings we seek to save; we are all part of the same vast, interconnected existence. Every being we encounter, including those who seem lost or difficult, is a soul waiting for our help.
When you see a being struggling, they are often trapped by the weight of their own and the interference of negative forces. They have lost their autonomy and are unable to find their way. In such moments, it is vital to avoid the traps of the mind that lead to further negativity. You must be mindful of your reactions:
Instead, we must cultivate the compassion to transform our perspective. We must strive to see the good, think of the good, and speak of the good, even in the midst of darkness.
How do you, as a member of the fourfold assembly, respond when you encounter suffering? It is a question that tests the depth of your practice. Consider your typical reaction:
Chanting Namo Amituofo is the only correct response. Do not add to the chaos or make the suffering worse by reacting with your own ego. When you chant, you bring the light of the Buddha into the situation.
Remember that in past lives, you were once in their position. Even in this life, you may have been there, though you have forgotten. A true practitioner of compassion does not push beings further into the abyss of the hells or the demon paths. Instead, you should offer comfort and acceptance. You are there to help them stand up, wipe away their tears, and encourage them to move forward on the path once more.
The world is full of suffering because beings do not understand the nature of their own pain and lack the strength to resolve it. However, the Buddha’s teachings reveal the truth: every being possesses the original Buddha-nature. Their current suffering is merely a result of being lost and trapped within the cycle of rebirth. We must embrace them with patience and acceptance. For those who can chant, the power of Namo Amituofo will provide the needed to resolve their suffering. For those who cannot, we act as guides, using the Buddha’s light to lead them out of the darkness. This is the true test of our vow and our wisdom.
