The Diligent Cultivation of the Heart

Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju:

No matter what you do, diligent cultivation will always yield a harvest. This principle is universal; it applies to your studies, your spiritual practice, your life in this world, and your journey toward transcendence.

The Universal Law of Effort

In this world, everything arises and ceases according to the laws of karma. When you work hard, even if you encounter natural disasters or human-made calamities, you must understand that these are simply the ripening of past karma. Instead of despairing, you should feel gratitude, for each challenge you face is an opportunity to resolve a debt from the past. By enduring these trials, you are clearing away the obstacles that have long hindered your path.

The Path of Transcendence

When it comes to the path of transcendence—the path to Awakening—you must be fiercely diligent. You must cultivate with unwavering focus. To make true progress, you must commit yourself to the following:

• Daily Practice: Engage in prostrations, chant Buddha's name, and recite the Sutras with a sincere heart.
• The Three Learnings: Diligently practise the Three Learnings of Precepts, Samadhi, and Wisdom, ensuring they are the foundation of your daily life.
• The Six Perfections: Move forward directly and without laziness, applying these virtues to every interaction you have.

In every single recitation of the Buddha-name, you are simultaneously practising the Three Learnings of Precepts, Samadhi, and Wisdom and the Six Perfections. Do not view these as separate tasks, but as a unified way of living.

Tending the Soil of the Heart

The fourfold assembly must be diligent in their daily practice. When you chant Buddha's name, you must keep the Buddha in your heart. Only then can the Buddha’s blessings reach you, and only then can you receive the supreme compassion and merit inherent in the Buddha-name. It is said that when the heart is pure, the land is pure. Therefore, you should diligently cultivate the Buddha-land within your own heart.

Though your inner landscape may currently be overgrown with weeds and polluted by worldly attachments, do not be discouraged. During your daily practice, with every utterance of the Buddha-name, you are pulling out the weeds and purifying the soil. This is the essential work of the practitioner.

The Flowering of the Vajra Seed

By doing this, the Vajra Seed of the Buddha-name, which lies dormant within your soil, will be able to sprout. Under the illumination of the Buddha’s light and the support of the Buddha’s blessings, this seed will grow strong and flourish. Its leaves will spread, and you will eventually reach the point where you can transform your karma, achieve Awakening, and complete your spiritual journey.

Everything begins with your own effort, yet it unfolds naturally through the Buddha’s blessings. Make good use of every minute and every second; do not let them pass in vain. If you cultivate diligently, you will surely reap a bountiful harvest.
