The Natural State of Stillness

Namo Amituofo teaches us that the cultivation of meditative concentration is a matter of profound importance for every practitioner. In truth, this state of deep stillness is not something we create from nothing; rather, it is the natural state of our true self. When we engage in our practice with sincerity, this meditative concentration naturally reveals itself. It is like clearing away the dust from a mirror; once the obstruction is removed, the inherent clarity of the mirror shines forth on its own.

The Foundation of , Concentration, and Wisdom

One might ask, from where does this meditative concentration arise? It is derived from the practice of Precepts (Discipline), Concentration, and Wisdom. When you uphold the Precepts, your heart becomes calm and level, and from this stability, concentration naturally arises. By engaging in the following practices, supported by the Buddha's , you can begin to understand the true reality of the universe:

  • Chanting Namo Amituofo
  • Performing prostrations
  • Reciting the Sutras

As you listen to the teachings and hear the , you will gradually comprehend the truth of existence. Consequently, you will not be easily swayed by interpersonal conflicts, external environments, or the illusory phenomena of the world. This is how your meditative concentration is revealed.

The Supreme Shortcut of Chanting

Through the Buddha-light and the of Practitioner Su, we invite spirits to hear the Dharma and receive . With the assistance of the Buddha's power, we resolve conflicts with all beings. When your heart remains unperturbed, these beings are not stirred by your emotions; instead, they awaken. This allows your body to remain free from interference. Through this process of purification, you become even more refined, and your heart becomes even more tranquil. Eventually, this heart reaches a state of complete, silent stillness, where the purity of your true self is fully revealed.

Chanting Namo Amituofo is the supreme shortcut to attaining this state. The six-character name is the king of mantras. Contained within this holy name are the power of merit, majestic power, and the vow-power of the Forty-eight Great Vows of Namo Amituofo. For those who know how to chant, when the and meditative concentration manifest, wisdom will naturally arise.

The Perils of a Wandering Mind

Meditative concentration is the skill of your practice. The deeper your skill, the less likely you are to be disturbed by external ripples. Conversely, those with shallow or non-existent skills are easily provoked by the smallest matters. They become angry, their hearts fluctuate, and they inadvertently attract the presence of beings, invite spiritual attachment, or suffer interference from demon crowds. This disrupts your practice, and truly, it is not worth the cost.

Integrating Stillness into Daily Life

Meditative concentration is practical; it is an internal skill. When your heart is settled, you will find peace. In your daily life, you will not allow anything to disturb your heart or trigger anger. This is the state of being externally active while remaining internally unmoved. For practitioners, and especially for the monastic community, this meditative concentration should naturally manifest in every aspect of life:

  • In your movements and your stillness
  • In your walking, standing, sitting, and lying down
  • In your daily activities of eating, dressing, and dwelling

This state cannot be forced; it must be cultivated bit by bit in the ordinary moments of your daily life. By consistently returning to the Buddha's name, you will find that the stillness you seek is already within you, waiting to be realised.
