Heart, Vows, and Actions Follow Amitabha, Spreading Throughout Space and the Dharma Realm
Although a human life is brief, every being within it interprets their existence differently based on their unique experiences. For those who are currently facing the challenges of ageing, illness, or the crisis of death, life may feel like an unbearable burden of suffering. Conversely, for those who are currently experiencing or success, life may seem like a dream they wish would never end. For the young children or teenagers who are growing and thriving, life is a fresh beginning, full of hope as they step forward into the future.
Regardless of which stage one is in, all these experiences occur within the cycle of rebirth and the influence of . Everything we encounter, everything we feel, and everything we endure is unfolding within the currents of our past actions. We face countless changes amidst the reality of impermanence. The causes we have sown in the past manifest as the fruits we experience in the present and future. We often feel as though we have no control over our circumstances, yet we spend countless days drifting through the cycle of rebirth.
A fragrant life refers to a life of true autonomy—a life that has regained the power to be self-governing. It radiates a natural, subtle fragrance that benefits not only the individual but also all beings in their surroundings. Because of this fragrance, others are inspired to increase their faith in life and in the study of the Buddha-. It allows their body, mind, and spirit to find joy and undergo deep purification. Those who have the opportunity to be near someone living a fragrant life, and who can themselves allow their own lives to radiate such a scent, are those who have realised their true nature.
In our natural state, we tend to avoid foul odours and impurities, while we are naturally drawn to pleasant fragrances. Through the process of purification, and then more purification, we learn to live in a state of selflessness and . By grounding ourselves in , wisdom, and the practice of the , we begin to emit a natural fragrance that is the hallmark of a true practitioner.
This fragrance is a powerful energy that supports the practitioner in facing various unexpected situations. It provides the awareness needed to ensure that one is not hindered by difficult circumstances. With this clarity, one can break through obstacles and continue to move forward on the path to .
The most important element in this journey is to encounter a true spiritual friend. Through their guidance, we are able to see the areas where we are still clouded by impurities and where our personality is still dominated by selfishness and attachment. We are helped to see our own predicaments, the places where our karma has manifested and left us feeling powerless, and the reality of our ageing and ailing physical bodies.
A true spiritual friend provides the path to resolution. They help us to break through our limitations again and again, guiding us through the process of purification, and then more purification, until we are finally able to radiate that natural, fragrant light. This fragrance is so profound that it inspires all who encounter it to increase their own faith in the path of practice and the realisation of their true nature. It is a form of teaching that transcends words—a silent, living example of the Dharma.
