The Harmony of Individual and Group Practice
In the life of a practitioner at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre, there are two essential modes of cultivation: self-cultivation and group cultivation. Both are vital for your spiritual growth. Self-cultivation is the time you set aside to look inward, to identify your shortcomings, and to strengthen the areas of your practice that require more attention. It is a time for quiet reflection and personal discipline.
Group cultivation, on the other hand, involves the fourfold assembly of disciples coming together to practise in unison. Whether you are performing prostrations, chanting Namo Amituofo, or reciting the Sutras, you are working as one. When you join your heart and mind with others, you create a powerful collective energy that propels everyone forward in their spiritual achievements. How can we truly grow if we do not support one another in this shared journey?
The Sacred Service of the Kitchen
Consider the fourfold assembly of disciples working in the kitchen. When they prepare meals for the community, they do so with a unified heart. As they wash, chop, and cook, they maintain a peaceful and joyful demeanour. Many choose to chant Namo Amituofo while they work, turning the preparation of food into a form of meditation. By doing this, they are not merely preparing a meal; they are creating a connection of with everyone who partakes in the food.
If this service is performed during the , the merit is even more profound. You are then establishing a connection of Dharma not only with the living but with the Buddha or and all beings throughout the Ten Directions of the Dharma Realm. Every action becomes an offering of .
Purifying the Mind Through External Labour
The same principle applies to those who clean the environment or wash the dishes. If you can perform these tasks with a heart full of , gratitude, and , you are engaging in a practice that transcends ordinary work. When you serve with a heart that seeks no personal gain, your actions become pure merit. Even if you perform these tasks with a focus on accumulating , the result is still immeasurable.
Think of those who work in the laundry room. They have the precious opportunity to serve the fourfold assembly by removing the filth from the clothing of others, restoring them to a state of cleanliness and brightness. As you wash away the stains on the fabric, you are simultaneously washing away the layers of filth upon your own heart. This act of service helps your own nature become clear, pure, and bright. It is a beautiful cycle: by helping others, you are ultimately helping yourself to awaken.
The Virtue of Cherishing Blessings
When you participate in outdoor work or go out to purchase supplies for the temple, you are ensuring that the fourfold assembly has the food, clothing, and resources necessary to sustain their lives and their practice. This includes the water and electricity that power our daily activities. Because these resources are hard-won and precious, all disciples and users must hold them in high regard. You must practise gratitude and use everything with great care and restraint. Only by cherishing these Blessings can your practice remain stable and long-lasting.
Finally, consider those who mend and repair the clothing of the fourfold assembly. By doing this, they are helping others to cherish their Blessings. In the process of mending what is torn, they are also mending the gaps in their own practice and adding to their own store of Blessings. Every act of service, no matter how small, is a step toward the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Let us all work together with one heart, for in unity, we find the strength to leave suffering behind and find true happiness.
