Recorded and transcribed by ’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe. On the twenty-third of February, 2025, during the third session of the , Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju offered these profound teachings on the nature of the infinite.
Where can one truly witness the infinite? It is not found in distant realms, but within the very fabric of our existence. To understand the infinite, we must look to the qualities of the awakened.
The compassion of Buddha or and those who have realised their true nature is infinite. They possess a heart that never turns away from any opportunity to save beings and help them leave suffering behind. Their singular purpose is to guide all beings to find true happiness. They do not abandon anyone, for their love is as vast as the sky, encompassing every soul that wanders in the cycle of rebirth.
Wisdom is infinite when it is cultivated through the right path. We must diligently practise the (Discipline), Concentration and Wisdom to extinguish the fires of greed, anger, and ignorance. Namo Amituofo, our Teacher, and Practitioner Su frequently remind us of the essential points of our practice. These are not merely suggestions; they are the vital keys to our liberation. If you can take these teachings to heart and apply them with diligent practice, you will undoubtedly find the path to progress.
A truly infinite mind-capacity is one that remains unmoved by the faults or improper behaviours of others. When we encounter the shortcomings of those around us, we do not look upon them with judgment or anger. Instead, we cultivate a heart that shares all that it possesses. By sharing our merits and our understanding with all beings, we allow them to experience the same and benefit that we have found on this path.
True tolerance is infinite. Consider the example of Practitioner Su, who, in order to save the demon crowds, endures their relentless magical attacks 24/7 without a moment of hesitation. This is a profound act of sacrifice. Any being who attacks Practitioner Su is given a precious opportunity to be saved, to enter the Western Land of Nature, and to finally leave the Demon Realm behind, never to create evil again. This act of suffering in to save the demon crowds is something rarely heard of in this world. If one does not possess the great compassion of a Bodhisattva, how could one possibly undertake such a task?
The Dharma Realm and the universe are infinite, yet the space within our own bodies is just as vast. Size is not a barrier; the small and the large are one and the same. We can witness this truth within our own physical form. The capacity of a mind that encompasses the great void and spans the sands of the Ganges is, in fact, visible within this very body. Once you have realised your true nature, you will understand that this infinite quality exists because it is empty. Because it is empty, it can contain everything. It has already transcended the limitations of time and space, and it is far too vast for any finite measure to contain. Namo Amituofo.
