Interview with Zhang Cunhao (Father of China's High-Energy Chemical Laser)
Thinking is a deeply ingrained habit for most people. Before one has realised their true nature, every thought acts as a trigger for the . It reaches into the vast storehouse of experiences and processes accumulated over countless lifetimes. When these thoughts manifest, they set the machinery of into motion, allowing past causes to bear their inevitable fruit.
People are accustomed to thinking in terms of . We habitually place the "I" at the very centre of our world, driven by a powerful instinct for self-preservation. Under these conditions, our thoughts become saturated with self-interest, self-view, and ego-attachment. We are prioritising personal gain, viewing the world only through the narrow lens of our own opinions, and clinging to the idea of a permanent, separate self.
In this state, our thoughts are focused on the self rather than on the welfare of other beings. Every fluctuation of these thoughts sends ripples through our consciousness. These ripples stir the residing within our bodies and attract attached spirits and demon crowds from the outside. This is precisely how the cycle of karma continues to turn.
In contrast, those who have realised their true nature have transformed their consciousness into wisdom. Because they no longer cling to the ego, their thoughts are entirely selfless. They no longer operate from the perspective of "I," but rather, they focus entirely on the needs of all beings. Their thinking is guided by a singular, compassionate purpose: how can I best help all beings leave suffering behind and find happiness, and how can I ensure that my actions remain in perfect alignment with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way?
Only thoughts that meet these criteria can be truly called "Good Thinking." This is the standard that all students of Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre must strive to uphold.
When our thoughts are dominated by the ego, we become slaves to our own karma. We find ourselves unable to control our minds or stop the endless stream of memories and emotions. These thoughts act like a fine, invisible net that traps our Body-Mind-Spirit, preventing us from finding peace or clarity. We are caught in a cycle of , anger, sorrow, and happiness that we cannot escape.
Therefore, I offer this advice to those who have not yet realised their true nature: chant more, think less, and strive to cease discursive thinking altogether. Let every thought be a Buddha-thought. Keep the Buddha-name close to your body, your heart, and your ears at all times. By doing so, you will purify your consciousness and soothe the karmic creditors within you. This is the most effective and rapid path to progress in your practice.
