The Profound Path of True Spiritual Practice
Teachings from Namo Amituofo
Hong Kong Winter Dharma Assembly, 17 October 2019

During the Hong Kong Winter Assembly, a time dedicated to the relief of suffering and the fulfilment of virtuous wishes, Namo Amituofo provided essential guidance on the nature of spiritual practice. On the seventh day of this assembly, these words were shared to illuminate the path for all practitioners.
The of the Heart
Practice is far more than the mere accumulation of knowledge or intellectual understanding. While we may study the teachings, true practice lies in the refinement of our daily conduct and the transformation of our behaviour. It is through this consistent, dedicated effort that we are finally able to realise our true nature. How many of us truly reflect on what we are doing when we say we are practising? We must look deeply into our own hearts to see if we have truly grasped the essence of this path. Practice, in this world, is all that one can see, yet it holds a profound and deep meaning. My child, have you felt this in your heart?
Transcending the Physical Form
Why do you engage in spiritual practice? If your efforts are directed solely toward the comfort, longevity, or desires of this temporary physical body, then your heart must undergo a profound transformation. True practice is not intended for the benefit of alone. Instead, it is the process of moving toward the state of an awakened being, and from that state of clarity, making the vow to help yourself and all other beings. It is only when you possess this vast, inclusive heart—a heart that seeks the liberation of all beings—that your practice becomes truly meaningful and infinite in its scope.
The Radiance of a Pure Heart
True practice requires a fundamental shift in how we relate to the world. We must adjust our demeanour, cultivating a softer, more compassionate presence in every interaction. This involves several key qualities:
- Sincerity:
- Your actions must be genuine, entirely free from affectation or performance.Truthfulness:
- Your heart must be authentic, devoid of any falsehood or hidden agendas.Selflessness:
- Your practice must be pure, untainted by personal gain or ego.Purity: Your spirit must be clear, unclouded by the darkness of ignorance or attachment.
Forged in the Crucible of Life
My children, you must understand that any genuine spiritual practice must be able to withstand the tests of life. Without these challenges, your practice cannot reach its full potential or achieve true success. Do not fear the difficulties that arise; instead, embrace them as opportunities to challenge yourself. It is precisely within the light of these trials that your practice is forged and your ultimate achievement is realised. May you walk this path with courage and unwavering faith.
