The Past and the Present
During the solemn proceedings of the and the Noon Offering, offers profound guidance on the practice of contemplation. This practice is a vital method for purifying the spirit and aligning oneself with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. To contemplate is to look deeply into the reality of our existence, moving from confusion to , from wrong paths to the right path, and from impurity to purity.
First, you must contemplate your heart and mind. Ask yourself: Is your mind truly settled and abiding in the teachings you have heard from the Buddha? When you listen to the , does it resonate deeply within your heart, stirring you to reflect upon your past actions and know to repent? A heart that is not receptive to the Dharma remains stagnant, but a heart that is moved to change is a heart that has begun the journey toward liberation.
Second, you must contemplate your body. Are you truly putting the Buddha's counseling into practice in your daily life? Life is fleeting and fragile; it is like a morning dew that vanishes under the sun. Do not be careless with your time, for if you waste this precious human life, you will surely regret it when the end arrives. You must ensure that your actions are consistent with your vows, for only through diligent practice can you secure your future.
Third, you must contemplate impurity. Often, external influences and worldly pollutions cloud your mind, obscuring your inner light and making it difficult to maintain the right path. You must be swift to cut off these attachments. The physical body is not permanent; it is composed of various fluids and substances that are essentially impure. Even the allure of physical beauty is temporary, destined to wither with age and illness. Do not allow yourself to be led astray by such illusions, for doing so will only damage your and your wisdom-life.
Finally, you must contemplate purity. Is your spirit alert and sensitive to the manifestation of your true nature? When your Six Roots are clear and bright, you are approaching the time of an awakened being. To reach a state of total knowledge and total clarity is the ultimate goal of your practice. By consistently applying these four contemplations, you will purify your body, mind, and spirit, eventually realising your true nature and fulfilling your wish to be reborn in the of Ultimate Bliss.
