This is a record of an interview with Wu Yingping, who sought deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. He now resides in the of the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. This account reflects upon his life and his passing during the massive fire at Wang Fuk Court in Hong Kong. Recorded by the chief writer, Shi Fa Hui, on December 13, 2025.

Wu Yingping speaks:

"The heart is the very foundation of hope. This is the most important lesson my parents taught me throughout their lives. One must take great care of their own heart, for the power of the human heart can be immense or negligible, benevolent or malevolent. It can bring chaos to a region or bless the entire world. It was with this conviction that I dedicated my life to becoming a psychiatrist, hoping to resolve the suffering within people's hearts.

The massive fire at Wang Fuk Court shocked the world, and many lives were lost in that catastrophe. By the time I reached the age of fifty, I had long ceased to crave anything extravagant. I simply knew that being able to enjoy a decent meal every day was a profound blessing. I often wondered what more I could offer to society, hoping only that I would not become a burden to others. Although I was a psychiatrist, I eventually felt as though I had developed a mental illness myself. My children were no longer by my side, as they felt my 'old' energy was too overwhelming. I understood this—having been a psychiatrist for so long, my own mental state had become somewhat peculiar, making others feel uneasy. Just as a cardiologist can suffer from heart disease, this is not a strange phenomenon at all."

The Burden of the Healer

"On the day of the fire at Wang Fuk Court, I was at home humming a small tune. I had just finished a treatment course for a patient, and I felt a sudden sense of relief. To be honest, the emotional burden of interacting with patients was immense, and this became more apparent as my years in the profession grew. In truth, given my seniority and experience, I could have retired long ago. The process of treating patients was rarely a joyful experience, so why did I continue? I suppose I simply felt that as an old man, I had little utility left, and I hoped to leave behind more assets for my children to make better use of. There is a saying: 'A long illness tests the devotion of children.' I was a witness to this truth myself. My children were actually very considerate of me, but they simply could not bear the weight of my various conditions. I kept telling myself to take it one day at a time, hoping that this would be enough of a legacy for both myself and my children.

My floor was relatively fortunate. When the alarm sounded, the sprinkler system automatically activated, turning the entire level into a torrential downpour. I nervously rushed out to see what was happening, and a neighbour told me there was a fire. We did not dare to delay. For some reason, the elevators were out of service, so four or five of us headed for the stairs together. As soon as we opened the stairwell door, we saw sparks flying everywhere from the other floors. We were pale with terror, our feet moving faster and faster as we pressed onward. I had not expected that the alarms and sprinklers on the other floors would be broken. Because we were soaked to the bone, we were less afraid of the intense heat, but seeing the charred remains in the fire and hearing the cries of agony mixed with the roar of the flames, my nerves were stretched to the breaking point. We reached the fourth floor when my shoelace came undone. I crouched down to tie it, but in that moment of distraction, a pillar of fire collapsed and pinned my foot. I screamed in agony, but the flames did not spare me. They spread across my entire body, roasting me like a stick in the fire. Even in my final moments, I was still thinking of my children, and that is how I perished."

Deliverance and the Truth of the Spirit

"Namo Amituofo is truly compassionate. He appeared above Wang Fuk Court, emitting light to guide us, the deceased, to safety. We followed the light in astonishment, and in that way, we arrived at the vast and boundless Western -Nature Land. Only after arriving at the Dharma-Nature Land did I understand that it was Namo Amituofo who saved me, and it was Practitioner Su who delivered me. Here, I have found the true treasure: the name 'Namo Amituofo.' I never imagined that listening to the Buddha-name and chanting Namo Amituofo could bring such peace and stability to the heart. As I continued to chant, my heart seemed to brighten—a sense of freedom I had not felt for a long time since I developed my own mental struggles.

After listening to the sutras here, I finally understood that what I had been experiencing was 'spiritual attachment.' Too many spirits from my patients had jumped onto me, causing me to suffer from the same illnesses they carried. It is a truly horrifying realization. It was not just me; I have come to see that any doctor, in the process of treating patients, is susceptible to being attached by the spirits of those they treat. This is absolutely terrifying! We doctors thought we were solving the patients' problems, but in reality, we were failing to address the issues of the spiritual realms.

I know that at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, it is Namo Amituofo who heals people through what is called 'spiritual healing,' which can truly resolve the problems of spirits within a person's body. This is truly magnificent! I have made a vow to follow Practitioner Su and learn from the Great Physician, Namo Amituofo. I will hold tightly to the name 'Namo Amituofo' every day, hoping that one day I, too, can heal others just as Practitioner Su does.

I hope my son and daughter can come to the temple to see me. In the past, you did not know how to help your father. Now, although I have passed away, Namo Amituofo has saved me and brought me to the Western Dharma-Nature Land. Here, I have received true healing; it is Namo Amituofo who has cured your father's heart-sickness.

I am deeply grateful to the Greatly Compassionate Namo Amituofo, grateful to Practitioner Su, and grateful to everyone at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. I am so happy that such a salvation team exists in this world."
