The Single-Lane Road to Buddhahood
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
The Vigilance of the Practitioner
When you are travelling upon a single-lane road, you must remain constantly alert. If you encounter a vehicle approaching from the opposite direction, even if the other driver is at fault, you must be prepared to stop and yield. If you fail to notice the danger in time and do not pause to let the other vehicle pass, you may suffer a serious accident, resulting in injury or even the loss of your life. Therefore, as a practitioner, you must maintain a high level of vigilance at every moment of your journey.
The as the Great Path
The Pure Land path is the supreme . It is a single-lane road, a direct path to Buddhahood. This path is vast and inclusive; it can accommodate vehicles from other roads, allowing them to turn into this single-lane highway and travel together toward the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. It is a path of unity, where all who seek the truth may find their way home.
Navigating the Interference of Demonic Forces
The vehicles approaching from the opposite direction can be likened to demonic forces. These forces may attempt to obstruct the Buddha-vehicle or prevent other travellers from reaching the Buddha-land. The nature of these encounters varies:
- The demonic vehicle may suffer an accident first, falling under the judgment of the laws of and cause and effect.
- The demonic vehicle may succeed in its obstruction, causing other travellers to lose focus and suffer an accident.
- The demonic vehicle may actively seek to block the path, testing the resolve of the practitioner.
However, for the Buddha-vehicle, you are protected by the Buddha and the Dragon and Heaven Dharma Protectors. Even if you have and the causes and effects with these demonic beings, and even if you experience temporary setbacks or injuries that delay your progress, you need not fear. As long as the Buddha is in your heart, and you remain under the protection of the Buddha and the Dragon and Heaven Dharma Protectors, you will surely be able to continue your journey forward.
The Universal Principle and the Power of the Buddha-Heart
This is the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. When your Buddha-heart, Buddha-vow, and Buddha-actions are all dedicated to the benefit of all beings, you possess the power to transform these demonic forces rather than being transformed by them. Eventually, you will certainly arrive at the Buddha-land. Conversely, if you act out of selfishness, holding onto your own private desires and ego-driven actions, you will be used by these demonic forces. You will be manipulated into creating various evils and will inevitably suffer the bitter fruits of those actions.
Transforming Obstacles into the Right Path
The Buddha-vehicle has the capacity to avoid the collisions caused by demonic vehicles. You can block their path, subdue the demons, and prevent them from disturbing or colliding with other travellers. Through the power of your practice, you may even cause these demonic forces to change their direction, allowing them to join you on the path toward the Buddha-land. By remaining steadfast in your practice, you turn the entire journey into a process of salvation for all beings.
