The Wandering Spirit in the Worldly Desert
In this world, amidst the myriad changes of worldly affairs, the human heart is often unsettled. Because the mind is unsettled, it moves with every passing circumstance. Because the mind fluctuates, karmic forces operate within it, and the cycle of and the causes and effects continuously repeat and alternate in our lives.
Trapped within the sufferings of birth, aging, sickness, and death, our spirit cannot be its own master. Consequently, we become frequent guests in the six realms of rebirth. As we drift in and out of these six realms, our spirit suffers immensely, finding it difficult to escape. It is much like a traveller lost in a vast, barren desert, desperately seeking a life-saving stream but unable to find one.
The Limited and the Infinite
For those with some good fortune, they may find a small stream to drink from. However, because the water is limited, they can only take small sips, which may sustain their lives for a short time. But for those with tremendous blessing, they find a life-saving stream that flows endlessly. They can drink without limit, and their body, mind, and spirit are quenched and feel refreshed, allowing their life to be truly sustained.
This life-saving stream is the great of attaining Buddhahood in the . It is the only source that can truly save us between life and death.
The Path of Faith, Vows, and Practice
Once you enter this great Dharma, whether you can receive the benefits of the Dharma, leave behind the suffering of rebirth, and enter the of the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss depends entirely on your commitment. You must walk step by step, grounded in Faith, Vows, and Practice:
- Faith: This is the foundation. You must believe in Namo Amituofo and believe in the existence of the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. This faith must be deep, unwavering, and firm.
- Steadfastness: Do not let your faith be turned by any external environment, and do not let it be shaken by the sufferings of birth, aging, sickness, and death.
- Diligence: As a practitioner, you must be active and persistent, moving forward according to your vows without ever retreating.
Even if you encounter desert-like hardships during your journey, as long as you continue to chant Namo Amituofo and maintain your practice, you will receive the Buddha's . You will find the life-saving stream to quench your thirst and continue your journey until you reach your destination: the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss.
Nourishing the True Nature
On this path to Buddhahood, you will find that the life-saving stream flows endlessly. This stream manifests as constant insights during your practice, filling you with Dharma joy. Through this process:
- Your spirit is nourished and your character matures.
- Your old habits and ego are transformed until they are gone.
- Your wish to be reborn in the West is fulfilled.
- You eventually reach full and Buddhahood.
