The Boundless Web of Life

Namo Amituofo offers these teachings on the Way of Harmony. When we speak of the way to get along with others, we are not merely referring to the interactions between human beings. This path of harmony is far more expansive. It encompasses our relationship with the entire natural world, including the earth itself, the plants, the animals, and the insects. It extends to the smallest creatures that crawl or fly, and even to the spirits, celestial beings, ghosts, and those in the Demon Realm. This connection reaches across this world and into other realms, including the vast, infinite expanse of the Milky Way and the beings residing within the realm of emptiness.

The beings we encounter are not limited to those we can easily name. They include the sentient and the insentient, the material world, and the spiritual realms. When we look at the world through the lens of the Dharma, we realise that everything is a participant in this great web of existence.

and the World of Dust

The Way of Harmony is fundamentally about how our Six Roots interact with the . Every moment of our lives is an interaction with these beings:

  • The air we breathe, which is filled with countless microscopic organisms, bacteria, and viruses.
  • The sights we see, whether they are visible to the naked eye or hidden from our perception.
  • The sounds we hear, or the subtle vibrations that exist beyond our current range of hearing.
  • The scents we smell, the tastes we experience, and the sensations we feel through our physical bodies.
  • The thoughts that arise in our minds, which are also a form of interaction with the spiritual world.

When you look at the world this way, you will realise that you are living in a space where sentient beings are everywhere. There is not a single place in the universe that is devoid of life. Everywhere you look, there are organic bodies and spiritual entities. They exist within physical forms, in the air, in the vastness of space, within solid matter, and in the depths of the water. You are constantly surrounded by spiritual beings.

The Precious Vessel of Human Life

Because of this, we must extend our respect and reverence beyond our immediate circles. It is not enough to be respectful only to the Buddha, Bodhisattvas, ancestral masters, Venerables, teachers, fellow practitioners, or our own family members. We must treat the vast, boundless beings of the Dharma realm with equal respect. Even the smallest speck of dust deserves our reverence, for every single entity possesses the Buddha-nature.

However, it is only in the human world that we possess a physical body capable of True Cultivation. We use this temporary, false body to realise our true nature and attain Buddhahood. Do you understand how precious this human body is? Countless beings with karmic affinity have been saved because a practitioner used this human form to cultivate and achieve liberation. By doing so, they have escaped the cycle of rebirth and attained rebirth in the of Ultimate Bliss.

You must be careful never to create enmity with any being. If you cause harm, you and the beings you encounter will suffer, falling into the cycle of rebirth and the Three Evil Realms, where it is difficult to find a way out of suffering.

Purifying the World through the Buddha-Name

My children, please take up the Buddha-name. Chant Namo Amituofo with your heart. Use the meritorious power of the Buddha's name to purify everything you encounter. You must chant with a spirit of , remaining humble and modest in every breath.

Align your heart with the Buddha-heart and strive to save all suffering beings. Align your vows with the Buddha-vows, wishing only that all beings may leave suffering behind and be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Align your actions with the Buddha's actions. Wherever you go, may all beings you encounter receive the benefit of , so that they may be reborn in the Western Pure Land or at least find a better path in the human or celestial realms.

Walking the Path of

You must purify your heart. This is a continuous practice of maintaining a pure and good heart in all your interactions. To walk the Way of Harmony, you should:

  • Think good thoughts, see the good in others, and speak kind words.
  • Maintain a gentle and pleasant countenance, which brings to all beings.
  • Practise Generosity, creating good karmic affinities with everyone you meet.
  • Always interact with others through the virtues of Compassion, Joy, and Selfless Giving.
