Navigating the Turbulent Sea of
In the vast, turbulent sea of confusion and karma, every passing second is filled with constant change. There is never a moment of true stillness. To survive these shifting tides, you must cultivate the skill of the Unmoved Mind. Without this, you will inevitably be swept away by the currents, drifting wherever the waves of karma take you. If you are carried to the east, you go east; if you are carried to the west, you go west. In such a state of helplessness, how can you ever hope to become an awakened being? How can you ever hope to break free from the powerful pull of your past karma? If you remain adrift, you will continue to float and sink in this sea of karma without any hope of escape.
The Hand of
Only by remaining unmoved when your karma manifests—by refusing to be deceived or pulled along by these forces—can you possibly develop the strength to turn away from this sea of suffering. Think of a person who is drowning. When they see the Buddha or a reaching out a hand to save them, they must be willing to reach out their own hand in return. Only then can the Buddha or Bodhisattva grasp their hand, pull them from the rising and falling waves, and help them transform their karma. Once you are no longer controlled by the forces of your past actions, you finally have the possibility of escaping the dangerous cycle of reincarnation.
The Foundation of and Concentration
The Unmoved Mind is the true skill of a practitioner, and it manifests through the practice of Precepts and meditative concentration. These are the pillars of your spiritual life:
- Precepts: These act as a protective shield for your body and heart, keeping you safe from harm.
- Meditative Concentration: This allows you to remain calm and steady, preventing ripples of disturbance in your heart.
When you possess deep meditative concentration, you do not trigger your karma. Consequently, your cells are not disturbed or damaged by or attached spirits. When your heart is still, your body responds in kind:
- Cells that are capable of replacement and regeneration can grow, thrive, shrink, and renew themselves in a state of natural, quiet harmony.
- Cells that cannot be replaced or regenerated are able to remain in a state of natural health, allowing you to maintain vitality and avoid illness.
The Source of Eternal Vitality
This is especially true for your mental state. Because you possess an Unmoved Mind and are not disturbed by the interference of karma, you are able to receive both internal and external energy. By allowing these energies to function fully, you can maintain a state of abundant mental clarity and vigour. Consider the two sources of this energy:
- Internal Energy: This is your own inherent light, goodness, and purity.
- External Energy: This comes from the food you consume, the Buddha-light, and the Buddha-name.
The Buddha-light and the Buddha-name are particularly powerful, as they provide a source of pure, virtuous energy. This energy sustains your spirit for long periods, allowing you to appear youthful and vibrant. Therefore, the benefits of practising the True Teachings—freedom from premature ageing and freedom from illness—are clearly visible in the practitioner who has successfully cultivated the Unmoved Mind. This is the true, tangible benefit of your spiritual practice.
