Within its swirling depths, one can perceive layers upon layers of sentient beings who have gathered here, drawn by the hope of finding spiritual deliverance.

A Gathering of Suffering Souls

The beings residing within this mist are diverse, yet they share a common history of profound suffering. They come from the ghost realm, the hungry ghost realm, and include various demon crowds. Among them, we can observe:

• Victims of War: Men, women, and children who perished in conflict. They appear ragged, starving, and frail, still trapped in the space between worlds, reliving the hardships of their final days.
• Animal Spirits: Beings who were slaughtered for food. Their forms often appear incomplete or dismembered, yet their spirits remain anchored to the intense pain and terror they felt at the moment of their death.
• Pandemic Victims: Souls who passed away during times of plague and disaster, still lingering in the space between dimensions, enduring the lingering agony of their illnesses.
• Lonely Wandering Spirits: Those who have no one left to offer them prayers or sacrifices, drifting through the void without a home or support.
• Demon Crowds: Beings who have caused great harm and are now seeking a path to surrender and find peace.

The Weight of Karmic Retribution

Within the grey, misty atmosphere and the moisture of the air, there exist countless demon crowds. Their current state is the result of the negative karma they accumulated in past lives. They are destined to endure long, arduous kalpas, manifesting as molecules of mist and water to experience the consequences of their past actions. Because they have no one to guide them and no one to recognise their plight, they remain trapped in this cycle of suffering. This is the heavy retribution that many of these demon crowds must bear. While they may have used their powers to commit evil in the past, they are now learning that every action has a consequence. If they are to face the full weight of their retribution, the suffering will be both extreme and long-lasting. It is our hope that these beings now understand the gravity of their situation and feel a sense of urgency to change their ways.

The Compassionate Light of Deliverance

The Thrice Yearning Ceremony held at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre is a beacon of hope for these lost souls. Through the presiding presence of Namo Amituofo and the power of Practitioner Su’s Dharma Body, the temple possesses the unique capacity to perform Chao Du for such a vast multitude of suffering beings and demon crowds. This is truly a manifestation of the Buddha’s boundless compassion in this world. It allows the beings and demon crowds hidden within the white mist—those who otherwise would have no one to save them—to receive the tremendous blessing of liberation. They are finally given the precious opportunity to leave suffering behind and find happiness, ultimately finding their way to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
