The Virtue of Unwavering Dedication
Teachings from Teacher-Practitioner Xia Lianju
Recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
To not shun toil is to embrace a spirit that refuses to retreat, fears no hardship, and remains undeterred by physical suffering. It is the capacity to bear burdens with steadfast perseverance and unwavering resolve.
The Selfless Example of Practitioner Su
Practitioner Su embodies this virtue of not shunning toil. His life is dedicated to a singular, noble purpose:
- To save all beings, helping them leave suffering behind and find happiness through rebirth in the .
- To ensure that every practitioner can focus their heart and mind on their practice, thereby achieving true success.
His teachings, his conduct, and his virtuous actions are deeply respected by all who witness them. He does not merely speak of the path; he walks it with every breath.
A Sanctuary Built on Devotion
The Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Goombungee, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, stands today as a testament to this spirit. It provides a high-quality environment for spiritual growth, a place where the work of saving infinite suffering beings and even the demon crowds is carried out daily. This sanctuary is the direct result of Practitioner Su’s refusal to shun toil. He has worked tirelessly, never complaining, to lead the fourfold assembly in following the Buddha’s path to save all beings.
Wisdom Born of Decades of Practice
Throughout this journey, the greatest beneficiaries have been the fourfold assembly and the countless beings who have been touched by this work. Practitioner Su has spent thirty years refining his own practice, elevating his spirit, and achieving . He shares these hard-won experiences—including the profound art of and the methods of following the Buddha to save others—during his lectures. In doing so, he provides clarity and answers the questions that arise for the fourfold assembly, guiding them toward the Truth.
The Heart of a Mentor
This dedication is the manifestation of a senior’s love and care for their juniors. The success of the fourfold assembly in their practice is due to the guidance and sacrifices Practitioner Su makes behind the scenes. It is through his efforts that spirit realm beings and the demon crowds are able to receive the Buddha-light of Namo Amituofo and be saved by his , finally leaving their suffering behind.
The Path of the Patriarchs
This is the conduct of the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the ancestral masters as they manifest in the human world. They show us that if one wishes to achieve success in practice, there is no such thing as gaining without effort. One must not shun toil; one must walk the path step by step, with feet firmly planted on the ground. Even when teaching beings who are stubborn or who refuse to listen to repeated counsel, if the causal conditions are ripe and there is an opportunity for salvation, the work continues without hesitation. It is a labour of infinite .
I hope that all of you will awaken, be fiercely diligent, and make the best use of your time. May you achieve success early and follow the Buddha in this noble work.
