The Path Beyond the Gates of Suffering

Namo Amituofo explains that the term "Evil Realms" refers to the lower paths of existence, which include the hell realm, the animal realm, and the ghost realm. To "transcend the boundless gates of the evil realms" means to swiftly rise above these states of suffering. Those who possess profound wisdom and a pure heart, untainted by the dust of worldly attachments, will not fall into these realms to endure their agonies.

The Reality of the Six Realms

It is important to understand that the evil realms are not confined solely to our own world. Throughout the Ten Directions of the Realm, one can observe the various worlds where beings of the six realms of existence reside. Among these, our own worldly realm is particularly known as a defiled and evil world of suffering.

The beings trapped within these evil realms face more than just physical pain; they face the profound difficulty of ever finding a way out. This is especially true for those in the hell realms, where the suffering is so extreme and the pain so intense that escape seems impossible. They are trapped by their own past actions, and only by relying on the power of the Buddha and the strength of his vows can they be rescued.

The Compassionate Vow of Namo Amituofo

Namo Amituofo is fully aware of the immense suffering endured by beings of the six paths in these lower realms. He knows that, left to their own devices, these beings lack the strength to liberate themselves from their plight. Therefore, in the very first of his Forty-eight Great Vows, Namo Amituofo vowed that his of Ultimate Bliss would be free from the existence of any evil realms. Furthermore, he vowed that any being who reaches the Western Pure Land will never again fall back into these lower states of existence.

To facilitate this, Namo Amituofo has infused the Holy Name "Namo Amituofo" with his own power of merit, majestic power. If a being in the evil realms is fortunate enough to hear the Holy Name "Namo Amituofo", they have the opportunity to open the space of their confinement and escape the torment of those realms. The Holy Name acts as a key, breaking the chains of and offering a path to liberation.

Wisdom as the Key to Liberation

Those who are able to realise one's true nature and attain Buddhahood, and those whose wisdom is vast and whose hearts are pure, possess a profound capacity for liberation. Their wisdom is immeasurable, and they understand how to live in accordance with the Universal Principles, Truth, and the Right Path. Because they align their lives with these truths, they are able to transcend the boundless gates of the evil realms.

Through the practice of Buddhist education, these awakened beings help others to:

  • Recognise the laws of and cause and effect, understanding the true origins of their suffering.
  • Cease the creation of further negative karma, thereby distancing themselves from all forms of suffering.
  • Recognise the presence of Namo Amituofo, the beauty of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, and the existence of their own true self.
  • Find a true home for their hearts, allowing them to engage in diligent practice to rediscover their original nature.
  • Make the firm vow to chant the Buddha-name and seek rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.

By following this path, you too can transcend the cycle of suffering and return to the light of your true nature. Namo Amituofo.
