This is a record of an interview with Chang Yung-fa, the founder of the Evergreen Group, who sought deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. He now resides in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. This account reflects upon his life and his transition to the Pure Land. Recorded by the chief writer, Shi Faxin, on August 16, 2018.

Chang Yung-fa speaks:

"Namo Amituofo. I am Chang Yung-fa. Throughout my life, I have always been a man of integrity, standing tall and firm. I never concerned myself with trivialities or petty matters. As long as something was beneficial to society, I would support it without hesitation. In my business ventures, I possessed an unwavering determination and a strength of will that allowed me to overcome any obstacle, no matter how daunting. I faced every challenge head-on, and I never backed down from a fight."

A Life of Integrity and Perseverance

"During my time in the human world, I did not have the opportunity to encounter the Buddha’s teachings. Had I known them, I believe I would have applied myself to the with the same vigour I brought to my business. However, to reach the state of Buddhahood as my benefactor, Practitioner Su, has done, one must be willing to let go of so much. You cannot be attached to business, nor can you be entangled in worldly relationships. It is not a simple matter; it requires deep practice and a complete transformation of the heart."

"People often chant 'Namo Amituofo' as a mere habit, but the heart—the sincerity of one's intent—is what truly matters. I understand this now. Looking back, I can clearly see that the work of saving lives is far more significant than anything else. In the business world, my heart was constantly suspended in anxiety, and managing financial liquidity was the most difficult challenge of all. Fortunately, I had loyal veterans at Evergreen who helped me shoulder many burdens. I am truly grateful to all of you for your dedication."

The True Meaning of Gratitude

"However, mere words of gratitude are not enough. To truly help you—that is the only real way to show my appreciation. I was saved at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. It was my spirit that was saved, not my physical body. My spirit spent a long time listening to the sutras at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. The principles taught there are entirely different from the worldly, secular logic of society. I listened with great , and eventually, my benefactor, Practitioner Su, guided me to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss."

"I believe you may have heard of this place, though perhaps you never paid it much attention or truly believed in its existence. Now, I am telling you myself: this is a truly magnificent place. There is no calculation, no petty competition, and none of the complex, exhausting affairs of society. There is no suffering here, only the pure joy of the Dharma. Furthermore, I have regained my youthful vitality here. It is a state of being that is beyond description."

A Message to My Former Colleagues

"Such a wonderful place—I absolutely must tell you about it, because you are the people who worked alongside me throughout my life. We share a certain unspoken understanding. Now that you see this letter and hear my voice, you will know that it is truly me. I am calling out to you because I do not want you to suffer the cycle of rebirth. I hope you will all find the time to come and learn about this. It is for your own benefit. This time, you must believe me."

"Namo Amituofo."
