A Message on the State of Buddhism: The Fifth Letter of Zhao Puchu
From the Former President of the Buddhist Association of China
The Boundless Grace of Namo Amituofo
Namo Amituofo. The and holy grace of Namo Amituofo are vast and profound, far beyond my ability to repay. What I share with you now is the absolute, unadorned truth. I am Zhao Puchu, and I appear before you today in complete sincerity. I am not engaging in deception, nor am I performing displays of supernatural power. Such powers cannot articulate these words, nor can they unveil the profound truths I am about to reveal. The decline of the Buddha’s teachings is something that everyone can witness with their own eyes. Can we truly deny that this is happening? The Buddha’s teachings are so magnificent, yet how have we allowed them to fall into such a catastrophic state? How many people are willing to acknowledge that much of what is currently practised in the name of Buddhism is, in fact, contrary to the ?
The Neglect of the Three Learnings
Why has the age of the Dharma-ending period descended upon us? Is it not because the disciples of the Buddha have failed to cultivate themselves properly? We have neglected the Three Learnings of , Samadhi, and Wisdom. We have failed to study the sutras, the sacred teachings, and the very Truth that the Buddha left behind for us. The Truth requires us to realise the nature of emptiness, yet we stubbornly cling to the illusion of existence. Once we cling to existence, greed inevitably follows. How many eminent monks and virtuous teachers, upon gaining fame and profit, have allowed subtle greed and arrogance to take root in their hearts? When this happens, their original compassion vanishes without a trace. This is a truly terrifying prospect.
The Reality of
The world today is exactly as I have described; this is not a fabrication. If you visit various temples, you will see the truth for yourself. If you claim that these problems do not exist, you are merely deceiving yourself. If there were no such issues, everyone would have already attained Buddhahood. Even if they remained in this world, they would have achieved the fruit of Buddhahood. Why have they not succeeded? It is because there is still falsity within their practice. This is a subtle, interconnected relationship, yet it is clearly visible to those who look with clarity. The entire universe knows this truth. I, Zhao Puchu, speak these words directly and urgently because I hope that there is still a chance for salvation. I wish to help everyone, for the human body is difficult to obtain, and it is a precious opportunity that must not be squandered.
An Invitation to the Truth
Today, many high-ranking monks in the Buddhist community fall ill. This is a sign that they have not yet succeeded in their practice, for their very cells are still undergoing karmic retribution. If one is still bound by such debts, the efficacy of the ceremonies they lead becomes questionable. I say this clearly only for the benefit of all beings. If these beings are not successfully guided to the of Ultimate Bliss, they will eventually return to the cycle of rebirth, and their karmic debts will remain unpaid. I sincerely invite the great monks and masters to come and meet me. I am truly in the Western Pure Land, and I have truly come from there. Because of this, I have the means to assist you in reaching the Western Pure Land as well. For the sake of Buddhism in this world, I am willing to do this. Please come and find me; I am waiting for you at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Australia. Namo Amituofo.
