The Purest State of Mind
To abide in the Buddha-name means that your heart is free from all delusions. It signifies that you have let go of the chaotic ripples of the mind, allowing only one single, pure thought to remain. This singular thought is the act of resting your entire being upon the holy name of Namo Amituofo. When you truly abide in this name, you are no longer swayed by the external world, for your focus is anchored in the infinite of the Buddha.
The Foundation of the Six Perfections
Abiding in the Buddha-name is not merely a passive act; it is a profound state of spiritual discipline. When you rest your mind in the name, you are naturally upholding the , for your mind is no longer wandering into unwholesome paths. Your heart becomes steady, and from this stillness, the light of Wisdom begins to shine forth. This practice encompasses the Six Perfections in their entirety:
- Generosity: You offer your heart completely to the Buddha.
- Discipline: You maintain the purity of your conduct through the name.
- Patience: You endure the trials of life by returning to the name.
- Diligent Practice: You persist in your recitation without interruption.
- Meditation: You achieve deep concentration through the focus on the name.
- Wisdom: You realise the true nature of reality through the Buddha's light.
This is the practical realisation of your vow to be reborn in the of Ultimate Bliss.
The Infinite Power of the Holy Name
The name of Namo Amituofo is the most pure and virtuous of all thoughts. It possesses the unique power to dissolve all delusion, discrimination, and attachment. If you can truly arouse the mind and single-mindedly recite Namo Amituofo, you are following the path from your initial aspiration all the way to the attainment of Buddhahood. This holy name is a vessel containing the immeasurable power of merit and majestic power of the Buddha, as well as the fulfilment of the Forty-eight Great Vows. It represents the magnificent dignity of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
Namo Amituofo is the most honoured among lights and the king among Buddhas. When you chant this name, you are simultaneously invoking the names of all the immeasurable and boundless Buddhas throughout the ten directions. Furthermore, this name is the king of mantras. By chanting it, you are accessing the boundless energy and merit contained within all sacred mantras, bringing protection and purification to your body, mind, and spirit.
Attaining the Treasure King Samadhi
When you chant the name and abide within it, you enter a state of deep, profound meditation. This leads to the attainment of the Treasure King Samadhi, which is the supreme state of concentration. In this context, Samadhi refers to the unwavering stillness of the heart. By resting your mind upon the Buddha-name, you are employing the most wonderful method to achieve this king of all states of peace.
To sincerely call upon the name of Namo Amituofo with a heart that is not inverted or confused is the essential requirement for rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss at the time of death. It is the necessary capability that allows one to know the time of one's departure in advance, to reach , and to travel freely between this world and the Western Pure Land.

If, during an emergency or a moment of crisis, you are able to use your awareness to quickly raise the name of Namo Amituofo, this is a sign that your good roots from past lives are manifesting. It is the result of your daily practice of abiding in the Buddha-name. More importantly, it is the manifestation of the Buddha's and the protection of the -protecting deities who guard you. Such strength is not gained by chance; it is the fruit of your consistent, sincere practice.
