The Great Obstacles to Our Practice

The —Greed, Anger, Ignorance, Arrogance, and Doubt—are the most significant obstacles to your spiritual practice. You must strive to nurture and Wisdom within your heart, and you must be fiercely diligent in your efforts to eradicate these poisons from your life.

Consider the nature of these Five Poisons. They act as potent toxins that infiltrate every aspect of your being. They penetrate your cells, your internal organs, and your entire body. When your body, mind, and spirit are polluted by these toxins, you inevitably create negative , which manifests as the suffering of aging, sickness, and death.

The Web of Karmic Debt

For every one of the Five Poisons, there exist corresponding beings who have been harmed by them throughout your many lives. These are the infinite suffering beings who have been injured by these toxins across countless lifetimes. Throughout your accumulated lifetimes, regardless of the time or space in which you have existed, the concept of has been the centre around which other beings have clung or relied.

When you encounter those who oppose you, violate your interests, or create negative influences in your life, you often find yourself in conflict. Because of this, these individuals frequently become your . This cycle of conflict leads to mutual harm, trapping everyone involved in a cycle of suffering. Regardless of which realm of existence these beings inhabit, they have all been deeply wounded by the toxin of anger. This anger often manifests as a temperament or personality that is incredibly difficult to change or overcome.

The Fire That Consumes Merit

When anger arises, it is like a fire that burns down the forest of your merit. The merit, virtue, and that you have accumulated through your daily, diligent practice are all reduced to ashes the moment the fire of anger ignites. You can see the manifestations of anger everywhere in the human world, but it is even more prevalent and intense within the Three Evil Realms:

  • The hells, where suffering is absolute.
  • The animal realm, where instinct and fear dominate.
  • The hungry ghost realm, where craving and frustration never cease.

Those who harbour heavy anger often find themselves descending directly into the hells after the death of the physical body to undergo retribution. Therefore, you must realise that a heart filled with anger is not something you should ever possess.

Cultivating the Antidote

How, then, can you counteract this anger? The answer lies in the diligent cultivation of compassion and Wisdom. When you see the suffering of other beings, you will naturally develop a desire to help them leave suffering behind and find happiness. Because of this compassion, when you face beings who are filled with anger or who are currently consumed by the fire of rage, you will be able to respond with kindness and tolerance.

You will not be ignited or provoked by their anger. Instead, you will use your compassion, Wisdom, and tolerance to extinguish the flames of their rage. By maintaining a state of meditative concentration, you remain unmoved, effectively blocking the attacks of their anger. By expanding your mind-capacity, you can understand and accept the suffering of those who are unable to control their own anger—the suffering of being unable to take charge of one's own heart. Cultivating compassion and Wisdom is a vital task. It is the essential condition for counteracting the Five Poisons and ensuring that your practice continues to progress steadily.
