The Cycle of Habitual Existence

For countless eons, we have wandered through the six realms of rebirth, drifting aimlessly like floating clouds. We have become so accustomed to being driven by the force of our that we have forgotten our true nature. We have lived as if we were slaves to our past actions, unaware that we possess the power to transform this karma and rediscover our original, true self.

If you wish to embark on the path of practice, you must be prepared to put in the necessary effort. It is only through diligent practice that you can break free from the chains of karmic influence. This is the only way to gain the opportunity to transform your karma, achieve , and realise your true nature.

The Path to Overcoming Karma

The various methods of practice are designed to help you face and overcome the weight of your karma. By engaging in these practices, you can eventually see the truth of reality clearly. This clarity is the foundation of Awakening, allowing you to transform your life and move toward the light of wisdom.

The Gate is the most magnificent and effective path for practitioners in this age of the Dharma’s decline. Among all the methods within this gate, chanting the name of Namo Amituofo is the most convenient, direct, and powerful way to make progress. This is because the Forty-eight Great Vows of Namo Amituofo are infused with the power of his name, specifically designed to guide and protect all beings who hear it.

The Promise of the Forty-eight Great Vows

If you can live according to these vows, your practice will surely advance. Namo Amituofo has made these sacred promises to ensure our liberation:

  • The Eighteenth Vow: The Vow of Ten Recitations. Namo Amituofo promises that if any being in the ten directions hears his name, places their faith in him, and wishes to be reborn in his land, even if they only recite his name ten times, they shall be reborn there. Only those who commit the five grave offences or slander the True Teachings are excluded.
  • The Nineteenth and Twentieth Vows: The Vow of Arousing Mind and the Vow of Welcoming at the End of Life. Those who hear the name of Namo Amituofo, arouse the Bodhi mind, and perform virtuous deeds with a steadfast heart will be welcomed by Namo Amituofo and the Bodhisattvas at the moment of their passing. Within a mere instant, they will be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss and attain the status of a who never regresses.
  • The Twenty-first Vow: The Vow of Repentance and Rebirth. If beings have committed past evils but hear the name of Namo Amituofo, they can repent, perform good deeds, and hold to the . By wishing for rebirth in the Pure Land, they will never again fall into the Three Evil Realms and will be reborn in the Western Pure Land.
  • The Twenty-second, Twenty-third, and Twenty-fourth Vows: The Vow of Purity and Transformation. Women who hear the name of Namo Amituofo, arouse the Bodhi mind, and wish to be reborn in the Pure Land will be transformed into men upon rebirth. All beings who reach the Pure Land are born through transformation within the seven-jewelled lotus ponds.
  • The Twenty-fifth, Twenty-sixth, and Twenty-seventh Vows: The Vow of Respect and Virtue. Those who hear the name of Namo Amituofo, rejoice, and pay homage to him will be respected by all heavenly beings and humans. After their life ends, they will be born into noble families, possess perfect faculties, and always practise the most magnificent holy life.
  • The Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth Vows: The Vow of Deep Wisdom. Bodhisattvas from other worlds who hear the name of Namo Amituofo will attain the state of deep peace and wisdom, remaining in this state until they reach Buddhahood, while constantly making offerings to infinite Buddhas.
  • The Forty-sixth, Forty-seventh, and Forty-eighth Vows: The Vow of Steadfastness. Bodhisattvas who hear the name of Namo Amituofo will attain the wisdom of the Dharma, remain in a state of equality, and never regress from their path to Enlightenment.

The Direct Way to Enlightenment

The content of these vows repeatedly emphasises the importance of hearing the name of Namo Amituofo. By practising the Pure Land path and living according to these vows, you receive the blessing of the Buddha’s power, which brings forth magnificent benefits. Therefore, the practice of arousing the Bodhi mind and single-mindedly reciting Namo Amituofo is the most effective method for your journey.

By combining your own efforts with the power of Namo Amituofo, you will be helped to awaken. This is a supreme method that allows you to save yourself while being saved by the Buddha. It is a path specifically designed to help connected beings leave suffering behind and find happiness. I hope that all of you can understand the depth of this practice and awaken as soon as possible.
