The Path of the Hero

The words, 'Always be a teacher of celestial beings and humans, and become a hero of the three realms,' are taken from the seventh chapter of The Infinite Life Sutra, which focuses on the necessity of achieving true . To understand this profound teaching, one must first grasp the nature of the three realms: the realm of desire, the realm of form, and the realm of formless existence. These realms constitute the entirety of the world inhabited by both human beings and celestial beings.

What does it mean to be a 'hero of the three realms'? In the highest sense, this title refers to a Buddha. However, in a broader context, it also encompasses Bodhisattvas and those who have realised their true nature. A hero of the three realms acts as a guide and teacher for all beings. Such a person does not merely understand the Universal Principles, the Truth, and the Right Path; they embody these teachings in every action. They are the true practitioners who never deviate from the path of wisdom and .

A Universal Mission of Liberation

The role of a hero of the three realms is not confined to our Earth. Across this world, in other dimensions, and throughout the countless Buddha-lands of the universe, there exist innumerable heroes of the three realms. Their shared mission is to lead sentient beings out of the cycle of rebirth, helping them to transcend the three realms so that they may no longer suffer the agonies of the six realms of rebirth.

To fulfil this noble mission, a hero of the three realms must possess two essential qualities:

  • Wisdom (Prajna) as the Foundation: This is the clear, luminous understanding of the nature of reality, which allows one to see through the illusions of the material world.
  • Compassion as the Heart: This is the boundless, selfless love that drives one to reach out to all suffering beings, ensuring that no one is left behind in the darkness of ignorance.

With these qualities, the hero can guide the masses from the shore of suffering—the six realms of rebirth—to the other shore, the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. They are the ones who navigate the storms and challenges that arise during this journey, providing the steady hand needed to overcome every obstacle.

Resolving the Cycles of Conflict

A true hero of the three realms is also a master of teaching the . They possess the ability to help the masses, as well as their , attached spirits, and even the demon crowds, to understand the terrifying nature of the laws of and cause and effect. By revealing the pain caused by the cycle of mutual consumption—where beings harm one another in an endless loop of vengeance—they inspire all parties to resolve their karmic debts.

When karmic creditors manifest or cause interference, the hero of the three realms knows how to soothe their anger and resolve the conflict through the power of the Dharma. By helping the masses maintain harmony within their body, mind, and spirit, the hero enables them to practise with fierce diligence. This allows practitioners to find peace, achieve success in their spiritual journey, and eventually become heroes of the three realms themselves, capable of helping countless others who have a connection with them.
