Teachings from Namo Amituofo

Teachings from Namo Amituofo, recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe.

Between heaven and earth, there exists a multitude of living creatures. Within this worldly realm, where the ordinary and the holy dwell together, we find the six realms of rebirth and the Four Sacred Realms, where Buddhas and Bodhisattvas reside.

The Endless Cycle of Existence

How many beings are currently lost in the cycle of rebirth? Some are sages diligently practising to attain liberation. Others are fortunate enough to possess a physical form, while many have passed away and exist only as spirits, drifting without a home or a body. Consider the varied states of these beings:

  • Celestial beings: Those who have accumulated great merit and enjoy the supreme happiness of the heavens.
  • Asuras: Beings of great power who are consumed by anger and combativeness.
  • Hungry ghosts: Those who enter the evil realms driven by greed, their hearts heavy and their desires insatiable.
  • Hell-dwellers: Those whose hearts are set ablaze by intense hatred, leading them into the depths of suffering.
  • Animals: Those who fall into this realm due to ignorance and a lack of clarity.

The heavens are vast and boundless, extending beyond the three realms into the Realm. The entire universe, including our own Milky Way, is contained within this expanse. All the myriad phenomena we perceive are merely manifestations of Causal Conditions, arising and ceasing in a constant flux.

The Truth of Samsara

You must strive to see the truth clearly. Do not remain lost in the creation of negative , for this only brings harm to yourself and others. We are trapped in the cycle of birth, aging, sickness, and death. It continues to grow and consume beings without pause. It is a state of profound suffering from which it is nearly impossible to escape on one's own.

If you have not yet perceived this truth, you will not understand the depth of this suffering. Without that understanding, it is even more difficult to generate the true desire for liberation.

The Refuge of the

This is why all Buddhas proclaim the magnificence of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. It is the destination for those who truly understand suffering and yearn to leave it behind. It is a land established for those with who wish to attain Buddhahood and save all beings from their misery.

The Western Pure Land is a Buddha-land where those who align with the original vows of Namo Amituofo can achieve success in their practice. It is a realm constructed by the power of Namo Amituofo, specifically to provide for the needs of all beings as they journey toward becoming a Buddha.

The Precious Opportunity of Human Life

Between heaven and earth, the human world is particularly magnificent. This is because you have the unique ability to engage in True Cultivation. You can use this temporary physical body to practise in this world, actively engaging in purification. By doing so, you can gradually resolve your old karma and ensure that you do not create new grievances, thereby elevating the quality of your spirit.

This process is not merely about the spiritual quality of your true self. It is a profound transformation that affects the countless beings within your body. This includes the cells themselves, the beings residing within those cells, and the countless spirits—including your , attached spirits, and even demon crowds—who dwell within you. As their spiritual quality is purified and elevated, you finally gain the opportunity to transform your karma.

Achieving True Freedom

The beings within your body are used by your true self; you are all part of one integrated existence. When you realise your true nature, the spirit of your body, mind, and spirit can become autonomous. You will attain a state of cool, refreshing freedom. You will no longer be bound by the cycle of karmic creditors seeking balance, nor the endless cycle of repaying kindness and settling grudges.

Between heaven and earth, the capacity to encompass all things is infinite. I pray that you may hear the name of the Buddha, chant Namo Amituofo, and make the vow to be reborn in the Western Pure Land.
