The Timeless Wisdom of Our Ancestors

Diligence brings merit, while frivolity brings no benefit. The phrase "diligence brings merit" signifies that through consistent, earnest, and hardworking effort, one will inevitably achieve tangible results and spiritual progress. Conversely, "frivolity brings no benefit" refers to idle play, aimless distraction, and the lack of focus, which offer no true assistance to your spiritual journey. This wisdom, passed down by our ancestors to educate the younger generations, is not merely a social convention. It is a fundamental truth that aligns perfectly with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way.

The Foundation of a Righteous Life

In the early education of a child, it is essential to begin by instilling positive and correct behaviours. We must guide them carefully so that they do not stray from the path. This is because once a person has deviated into wrong habits, correcting their course and returning to the right path inevitably involves the creation of . If a child grows up in an environment of constant frivolity and play, their heart will easily become restless, agitated, and unstable. If this becomes a habitual personality trait, it does more than just hinder their development; it turns them into a being who is controlled by their own karma, creating significant obstacles to their future practice.

The Dangers of a Restless Heart

The principle that "diligence brings merit, while frivolity brings no benefit" is equally vital in your spiritual practice. True practice must be focused on the heart. When we speak of diligence versus frivolity in the context of the heart, we mean the following:

  • Performing prostrations to the Buddha to humble the ego.
  • Chanting the name of Namo Amituofo to maintain focus.
  • Reciting the Sutras to deepen your understanding of the Truth.
  • Diligence in Practice: You must be diligent in your efforts to improve. This means committing yourself to your daily practice with sincerity and consistency.
  • The Foundation of Daily Lessons: You must engage in your basic daily practice, which includes:

By establishing this firm foundation, your heart becomes stable and is not easily swayed by external circumstances.

Transforming Through Discipline

Frivolity, expressed through aimless physical movements or idle speech, only serves to cause the heart to fluctuate and ripple with agitation. Such behaviour is of no benefit to your practice; it makes it difficult to collect your thoughts and calm your mind. Furthermore, such states of mind can attract karma to manifest and invite spiritual attachment, leading you to create even more karma. Throughout the process of your practice, you must be mindful to adjust your Body, Speech, and Mind at all times. This constant self-correction helps you to settle your heart, change your personality traits, and ensure that your actions lead to progress, ultimately allowing you to transform your karma. Therefore, you must be diligent in your practice and distance yourself from all forms of frivolity.
