Doing Your Best on the Path to Awakening
Teachings from Namo Amituofo
Delivered during the Thrice Yearning Ceremony, 8 January 2022
The Sacred Duty of Diligence
Beloved practitioners, when you reside within the temple, every single task you undertake carries profound significance. Whether you are managing major administrative responsibilities, performing humble manual labour, engaging in personal purification, or assisting others in their own spiritual growth, you must strive to do your absolute best. Do not distinguish between what you perceive as important or trivial, nor between what you find pleasant or mundane. Every action is an opportunity to cultivate your heart and refine your practice. By approaching each task with full dedication, you transform ordinary work into a path of spiritual advancement.
The Swift Laws of
However, you must be extremely vigilant regarding your conduct. There are certain boundaries that must never be crossed. Any action that causes harm to yourself or others, or any behaviour that violates the , is strictly forbidden. You must not engage in such actions, not even in the smallest, most insignificant way. This is because practising in a Buddha-land accelerates the manifestation of the laws of karma and cause and effect. In this environment, the results of your actions—whether they be seeds of goodness or seeds of negativity—ripen with remarkable speed and precision. Because the consequences of harming yourself, harming others, or breaking the Precepts manifest so quickly before your eyes, you must exercise the utmost caution in every thought, word, and deed.
The Purity of Intention
When you serve the community, focus your efforts on providing convenience and support to others. Strive to do your best in every task that brings and benefit to the collective. Understand that the quality of your work may naturally vary depending on your individual talents, your level of experience, and the sincerity of your initial intention. When you have given your best, accept the outcome with a calm and balanced heart. Do not dwell on the results or allow them to weigh heavily upon your mind. The laws of karma and cause and effect are judged not by the outward appearance of your work, but by the state of your heart and the nature of your actions. Therefore, it is essential that you cultivate a pure and virtuous heart. When you act, do so without:
- Complaining about the difficulty of the task
- Comparing your efforts to those of others
- Seeking personal gain or fearing loss
- Harbouring selfish intentions
Instead, silently accept the responsibility and proceed with a direct and sincere heart. Even if you spend a great deal of time on a task and achieve a result that appears perfect to the world, if your heart is not genuine, the karmic fruit you reap will be limited.
The Unending Path to
Continue your diligent practice, striving to purify your heart again and again. Let your goodness grow until you finally realise your true nature. The mission to save the world and rescue infinite suffering beings is a task that never ceases. Therefore, you must commit yourself to doing your best in every task that is necessary and within your power to perform. The temple is a wonderful place for practice. By doing your best, you accumulate merit and virtue, nourish your heart and nature, and cultivate both and wisdom. Yet, remain ever cautious. Do not create any form of negativity, for even the smallest, most subtle act of harm must be avoided. May you walk this path with unwavering sincerity and .
