Fearlessness on the Path of Awakening
Teachings from Namo Amituofo
The path of practice is a profound journey of continuous purification. It is a process of removing defilements and attaining purity, transforming , and ultimately reaching the state of . During this journey, our physical body, which is a product of our past karma, must face and overcome various tests brought about by our karma and our . These challenges are essential to our growth and manifest in several distinct ways.
The Crucible of Spiritual Testing
As you walk this path, you will encounter different forms of examination:
- Buddha tests: These are tests of your sincerity, resolve, and the depth of your faith.
- Demon tests: These are challenges that arise to distract you, test your focus, or pull you away from the right path.
- Karmic tests: These are the ripening of actions from your accumulated lifetimes, which must be faced and resolved.
Every single test you face is specifically tailored to the personality traits you have cultivated over accumulated lifetimes and those that have manifest in this present life. You must focus your efforts on the most difficult areas of your character. When you identify the strong, stubborn traits that cause you to stumble, you must address them directly. If you can face these traits with honesty and change your ways, you will be able to overcome the various adversities within the and the causes and effects of your life. This is how you make significant progress in your practice. However, if you fail to face these issues and refuse to change, the same testing environment will inevitably appear again and again until you learn the lesson.
The Courage to Change
Through these repeated experiences, you must learn to raise your awareness. Do not cling to or grasp onto biased views or improper behaviours. Instead, you must learn to be humble and modest, allowing yourself to change your ways. By doing so, you can effectively halt the momentum of your karma. You will no longer be controlled by your karma or your karmic creditors, and you will attain the fruit of changing your personality traits and passing these spiritual examinations. At this point, you will see that your practice is advancing, and the possibility of transforming your karma and reaching Awakening becomes a reality.
Seeing Through the Illusory World
Those who can successfully pass the various tests that arise during their practice are able to clearly distinguish between the illusory world and the ultimate reality. They do not cling to the or the various obstacles brought about by the physical body. Even when these sensations and obstacles are incredibly obvious—driven by the force of your karma—you must learn to let them go. You must recognise that these are merely the manifestations of karma and illusory conditions that arise and cease. By doing this, you will not be led astray by your physical sensations, the obstacles of , or the influence of your karmic creditors.
The Unstoppable Power of the Buddha-Name
Those who can pass these tests are able to maintain pure thoughts. They chant one Buddha's name to the end, 24/7. By relying on the pure and good energy of the Buddha-name, as well as the power of merit and majestic power bestowed by the blessing of Namo Amituofo, you can subdue your feelings, overcome the obstacles of the body, and resist the pull of your karmic creditors and karma. Karma is like a powerful, swirling whirlpool. Practitioners often find themselves unable to resist its force, becoming trapped in the current and pulled back into the cycle of reincarnation.
Fearlessness in the Face of the Karmic Whirlpool
At such times, only the practitioner who can engage in diligent practice and receive the blessing of the Buddha's power will have sufficient strength to resist the whirlpool of karma. However, this requires you to be completely fearless. You must have absolute faith in the Buddha and chant Namo Amituofo with a sincere heart. Only then can the Buddha's power truly support you. Only then can you make progress in your practice and gain the precious opportunity to transform your karma and reach Awakening. Namo Amituofo.
