The Trap of Discursive Thought

Namo Amituofo offers this compassionate guidance to all practitioners. We must reflect deeply on our current state of being. You are advised to cease discursive thinking and to refrain from falling into the trap of mere intellectual . Instead, you should learn to act in accordance with the nature of your : eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind.

This is a difficult practice for many to master. You have become deeply accustomed to the habit of thinking, planning, and then acting upon those plans to solve the problems of daily life. However, when you follow the path dictated by your thoughts, you are merely continuing to progress according to the momentum of your . As long as you rely on this conceptual process, you remain trapped within the cycle of rebirth, unable to break free from the powerful pull of karmic forces.

The Foundation of Goodness

Since you still rely on your thoughts to navigate the world, you must transform the quality of those thoughts. You must ensure that your mental processes are aligned with the Truth. Please consider the following practice for your daily life:

  • Think only of what is good.Look only at what is good.Speak only of what is good.Chant only what is good.Do only what is good.

When you establish goodness as the fundamental premise of your existence, you allow the true nature of your Six Sense Organs: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind to manifest. This manifestation is the revelation of your inherent awareness. The essence of these sense organs is naturally pure, good, and untainted. When you learn to utilise this nature and allow it to take charge of your life, you awaken your innate conscience and sensitive awareness. This is the very moment you gain the opportunity to transcend the control of karma and transform your destiny, thereby avoiding the cycle of rebirth.

The Mastery of the Six Roots

The teaching that we must give rise to all and achieve the fruit of refers specifically to the nature of these Six Sense Organs: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind. Consider the eye, for instance. When you see, you should ensure that everything you perceive is good. If you encounter that which is not good, you should choose to avoid it or distance yourself from it. If you find that you cannot avoid or distance yourself from such things, you must rely on your stability of meditative concentration.

This is why we must diligently practise the , meditative concentration, and wisdom in our daily lives. Only through this consistent practice can you develop the stability of mind required to remain unmoved when you see something unwholesome or even evil. Your heart will not be stirred, no ripples will arise, and you will remain free from interference and contamination. In this state, the nature of your eye organ takes command.

The Path to

When the nature of the sense organ is in command, it means that even before a thought arises, it is already good. When a thought does arise, it is also good. You are constantly transforming your into goodness. Consequently, every thought and idea that emerges from what your eyes see will be inherently virtuous.

The same principle applies to the ear. Everything you hear should be perceived as good. If you hear something unwholesome, you should distance yourself from it. If you cannot, you must again rely on your stability of meditative concentration. Your heart will remain undisturbed, free from the waves of emotion, interference, or pollution. By doing so, the nature of your ear organ takes command. The nature of the ear is inherently good and free from any stain of impurity. When this nature manifests, everything you hear and every thought that follows will be pure and good.

When all that emerges from your Six Sense Organs: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind is goodness, you have reached the state of Awakening and the achievement of Buddhahood. This is the ultimate goal of your practice: to return to the purity of your original nature and to dwell forever in the light of Namo Amituofo.
