Infinite Light: Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
Teachings from the Second Session of the Thrice Yearning Ceremony
The Radiance of Infinite Light
Infinite Light shines upon the suffering Body-Mind-Spirit of all beings. It illuminates the vast reaches of the universe, the Milky Way, and extends throughout the ten directions of the entire Realm. You may wonder, from where does this infinite light originate? It arises from the light of the heart, the light of , and the light of the crown. When these lights converge, the entire being becomes luminous, allowing one to see their true nature.
The Truth of a Restless Life
This light also comes from a profound understanding of the truth of our existence. Before one begins to listen to sutras and hear the Dharma and seek liberation, life is often filled with suffering and hardship. The mind is constantly in a state of agitation, never finding a moment of stillness or peace. It is a truly exhausting experience to live with a mind that knows no rest and no sanctuary. Without the guidance of the Buddha, the spirit remains adrift in the cycle of rebirth.
Understanding Our Karmic Connections
Through the continuous process of listening to sutras and hear the Dharma and inviting spirits to join us in practice, we begin to understand the nature of our . These beings are not merely adversaries; they are fellow beings who are suffering. They are connected to us through the threads of past lives and our present existence, bound by complex relationships:
- Debt and Repayment: We are settling accounts from past interactions.
- Revenge and Gratitude: We are balancing the scales of past grievances and past kindnesses.
Everything in our lives unfolds according to the laws of and cause and effect, as well as the arising and ceasing of conditions. We meet, we gather, and eventually, we separate. When the conditions are exhausted, we each go our separate ways, following the paths dictated by our own karma.
The Path to Resolution and Liberation
We must learn to see through these illusions and let go of our attachments. Do not continue to grasp tightly to what is already passing. Instead, you should focus on the following steps to purify your life:
- Repenting: Sincerely repent for the karma created in the past.
- Diligent practice: Strive to change your ways and change personality traits.
- : Extend great compassion to your karmic creditors so they may no longer suffer.
- : Wish for them to accept the resolution of these conflicts and be saved, so they may leave suffering behind.
Returning to Our Original Nature
On the path of practice, you must realise that your own suffering is the same as the suffering of all beings. In fact, the suffering of other beings is often far greater than your own. When you are willing to be fiercely diligent and persistent in your practice, you are moving from darkness into light. This Infinite Light is the light of the great compassion of Namo Amituofo, the light of the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, and the light of the Western Land of Dharma Nature. It is the original face of all beings and the true state of one who has realised their true nature.
