Leaping Over the High Wall
The Sixteenth Letter of President Zhao Puchu
A Message from the Buddhist Association of China
The Silence of the Heart
The letters have been arriving one after another, yet I see no response, no reply. I have observed how these messages are received. The first letter was read with sincerity; the second was read with simplicity; the third was read with indifference; and by the fourth, I wonder if you began to read with of afflictions. Do you all realise that these are my true, sincere words, written by me, Zhao Puchu, word by word? Yet, not one person seems willing to set aside their own views, to calm their heart, and to truly contemplate the letters I have written to you.
The Walls We Build
I can understand why there is such a reaction. This society is already filled with mutual distrust, suspicion, and conjecture. The erosion of the human heart and the prevalence of greed have led to the decay of social morality. Fraudulent incidents occur one after another. In order to protect themselves, people have built wall after wall, hiding in the corners of their own making, safe from any perceived attack or intrusion. How much longer can such a society be sustained? Ultimately, it will fall into decline. The universe will once again undergo the cycle of formation, abiding, decay, and emptiness, only to be destroyed and reborn. Even so, have you ever considered where such a vast number of human beings will go?
The Reality of Our Journey
If you are a practitioner of the Buddha's teachings, perhaps you believe in the laws of and cause and effect. Every person follows their own karma to be reincarnated. Should you not also calculate your own destination? In the vast, boundless ocean of existence, where exactly is your next destination? The fear of the unknown is truly terrifying. However, I, Zhao Puchu, sincerely wish to help everyone find a way to live within this confused and silent worldly realm. If you, like many others, still believe that you will surely obtain a human body in your next life, then you are mistaken. The probability of obtaining a human body again is extremely small. If you lose the opportunity to be human, you will inevitably descend further:
- You may find yourself in the hells, suffering through unimaginable torment.
- You may fall into the ghost realm, wandering in hunger and thirst.
- You may be reborn as an animal, or as one of the countless tiny, creeping, or flying creatures.
