Overcoming Demonic Obstacles
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
Third Session of the Hong Kong Winter Dharma Assembly, 2019

The Warning Signs of the Mind
When strange and unsettling thoughts begin to fill your heart and permeate your body, you must be deeply alert. Do not allow these disturbances to disrupt your practice. If your spiritual strength is weak, you will find it difficult to resist the powerful forces of negativity. When this happens, you may find yourself sinking into a state of profound suffering. If you reach a point where you no longer even feel that you are suffering, it is because you are no longer truly yourself. You have become polluted by external influences and have lost the ability to control your own mind and actions.
If you find that external spirits have entered your body, do not blame others for this occurrence. Instead, look within and reflect on where your heart has gone astray. If you can realise your mistake in this very moment, you must change your ways immediately. If you fail to recognise these signs, it becomes difficult to change, and your very nature will begin to shift. You will find yourself dancing to the tune of these negative influences, causing your mind to become chaotic and confused. How long will you continue to harm both yourself and others?
The Weight of Our Own
It is our own karma that creates obstacles for our body and mind. We create causes within the results we experience, and eventually, the retribution manifests in our lives. Whether we experience goodness or evil, success or failure, all of these outcomes are of our own making. When you are suffering, no one can take your place. Why did you create such chaos in the beginning? Whether you find yourself trapped in the fiery hells or at the bottom of the frozen mountains, your cries of agony go unheard by the world.
The Compassionate Rescue of the Buddha
Yet, even in these places of deepest suffering, the of the Buddha manifests. He appears to save all beings and offers a new chance for life. With great power and fearlessness, the Buddha performs for all beings. Do not let these demonic obstacles disturb you any longer. You must quickly turn your heart towards the Buddha-land of light. This teaching was recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
