Throughout history, any practitioner who aspires to rediscover their original, true nature must inevitably face the challenge of demonic tests. These tests serve as a rigorous examination of the practitioner's purity of heart and the sincerity of their vow to save all beings. Demonic forces often employ various forms of temptation to lure the practitioner away from the right path, specifically targeting the : wealth, lust, fame, food, and sleep.
For instance, the test of lust is particularly potent. Monastics may be tempted by the allure of physical beauty, while nuns may be tested by the presence of men who appear exceptionally attentive and considerate. The true test is whether the practitioner allows their heart to be moved. To feel even a flicker of desire is to violate the . If you encounter a situation or a person that stirs your heart, you must immediately leave the scene. Do not look, do not listen, and most importantly, immediately raise the Buddha-name in your mind.
In truth, once your heart begins to ripple with desire, it is already too late. Your purity has been disturbed, and your heart has become tainted. By failing this test, you have allowed your practice to regress. You have inadvertently activated the dormant within your , which in turn attracts , attached spirits, and demonic forces. Having lost the protection of the Precepts and meditative concentration, your wisdom becomes obscured, and you will find it nearly impossible to maintain the pure heart required to continue your practice.
When you find yourself in such a position, you must act decisively: immediately depart from the environment or distance yourself from the person involved, let go of the attachment instantly, engage in sincere repenting to clear the negative energy, and focus on purification through the practice of chanting .
Temptations regarding wealth, fame, and status often arise when a practitioner receives offerings from devotees or is surrounded by praise and admiration. This environment can easily cause the heart to swell with arrogance. Even the most subtle fluctuation of the mind in response to such praise constitutes the creation of karma. If you fail this test, you will inevitably face the bitter fruits of your actions.
There is a profound saying in the : "A single grain of rice from a donor is as heavy as Mount Sumeru. If you do not attain the Way in this life, you will have to repay the debt by wearing fur and horns." If you do not achieve success in your practice in this lifetime, you will fail to save beings and repay the kindness of those who supported you. You remain a debtor to the donors, and you will certainly have to bear the consequences of this debt.
Greed for food, excessive sleep, and a state of constant are also common obstacles encountered during the process of practice. These are often deeply linked to the manifestation of one's past karma, as well as one's ingrained personality traits and habits. If you do not work to improve these areas, your practice will struggle to progress, and you will lose the opportunity to realise your true nature.
To overcome the attacks and tests of demonic forces, you must first establish a foundation of meditative concentration. Your heart must remain unmoved. This is why the daily cultivation of your Buddha-recitation skills is so vital. You must strive to reach the state of , where you can remain unmoved by any person, object, or environment. You must be able to remain calm and steady, even when the external world is in turmoil.
You must be willing to change your personality and habits, as these are merely manifestations of your past karma and must be let go. You must overcome the various sensations and desires brought about by the physical body. It is essential to truly see through the illusion of the material world and let go of your attachments. You must realise that your spiritual life and your true nature are the only realities, while this physical body is merely a temporary vessel.
The true purpose of this body is to engage in True Cultivation. Do not create sins for the sake of 's fleeting desires, for doing so will keep you trapped in the cycle of rebirth, making it impossible to return to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. Those who have realised their true nature, along with the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, are also subject to attacks from demonic forces. However, they are aware of these attacks and remain undisturbed. Furthermore, they take on the suffering of beings to transform and save these demonic forces, causing the demons to feel fear, retreat, and eventually surrender. Practitioner Su is a living example of this state.
By understanding these truths, you will be able to remain unmoved when faced with demonic attacks. You will not create new karma, you will not allow your heart to regress, and you will finally find the path to diligent practice and . Namo Amituofo.
