Interview with Dr. Helmut Sohmen (Former Chairman of BW Group)
If you wish to achieve spiritual success in your practice and truly cultivate your skills, you must be prepared to undergo rigorous testing and purification. This process is essential for one to eventually realise one's true nature. Do not expect this journey to be smooth or free of obstacles. The path is often challenging because, throughout our accumulated lifetimes, we have created deep, heavy, and thick layers of karmic debt.
Because we have failed to repent and change our ways, we have repeated the same mistakes time and again, forging deep resentments and hatreds with countless beings. This is the reality of our past actions, and it is a burden we carry into our current practice.
Today, these karmic creditors are scattered throughout the six realms of existence. Although you may no longer remember the grievances, emotions, and conflicts of the past, these beings have found you. They are waiting at every moment to seek revenge. Sometimes, they may even integrate themselves into the very cells of your body.
When you have subtle mental notes, or when your actions are insufficient or not in accordance with the , these karmic influences can manifest as physical ageing or illness. Your heart may experience turbulence, and you may find it difficult to maintain control, which hinders your progress in practice. You must understand that all of this is the price you must pay for your past actions. You should be willing to accept these challenges without complaint. Furthermore, you must summon great strength to overcome and break through these difficulties; only then can your practice truly advance. This is the essential lesson you must face in this life.
To overcome is to address the negative personality traits, habits, and subjective views that have been cultivated over many lifetimes and manifest in this present life. The sooner you can change these, the sooner you will make progress. You must overcome your own lethargy. Only by repenting and breaking through these barriers can you move forward.
You must bring forth a sincere heart and genuine remorse; only through such change can you resolve the conflicts with other beings. It is through this process of deep reflection and transformation that we begin to clear the path ahead.
A true practitioner must be diligent in identifying and removing the obstacles that cloud the mind. You must work to overcome and eliminate the following:
You must also learn to overcome the parts of yourself that are difficult to control, including your wandering thoughts, messy thoughts, delusions, and emotional . By mastering these aspects of your own mind, you regain your autonomy.
Only by overcoming the self can you truly witness the achievements of your practice. When you have successfully refined your heart and mind, you will become a practitioner who walks firmly on the Buddha's path. You will be an awakened being who possesses self-mastery, and you will be ready to follow to save the world, rescue all suffering beings, and guide them toward rebirth in the . Namo Amituofo.
